I'll never watch a documentary on TV again

Was watching a cool doco called The Wonders of the Universe just now and it was awesome. But it was on TVNZ7 which means that it's quite likely I'll never see a doco on TV again because Sky is a complete rip off. RIP public broadcasting in NZ.

PS - the irony is that it was made by the pommes public broadcasting service - the BBC.

Presumably there was a financial demand for tvnz to prop-up important programming, such as shortarse St, close up, etc, etc.

The sooner tvnz is privatised, the better.

I'm in agrozzlement. I tuned into a very interesting discussion on the branding & perception of "New Zealand" last night on 7, the only remotely interesting thing on poorview. Of course, as soon as i left my seat for a Jonny Riddle the Chancellor changed over to Junior Master chef. Fooked if I do, fooked if I don't. Oh well, The Chawners are on tonight, I always feel better about myself when they are on....

    Having no advertising,

TVNZ7 was able to screen all sorts of thought provoking documentaries without upsetting advertisers. The series about the evolution of the big seven oil companies is a good example. I doubt a commercial network would screen something like that.

The government doesn't want us to think critically, they want us to watch the G.C, Shortland Street and Masterchef. That's where the advertising dollars go. It's the old adage of give the plebs bread and circuses while you erode their freedoms and dumb them down. It sucks.

I don't think the Gummint can be held responsible for what the "plebs" want to watch but they can be held responsible for limiting choice & depth of content. Probably not in their best interests to give people too much to think about, though.

I prefer my media free from being the mouthpiece of the sitting government.
Tvnz is merely that. Independant, questioning, researching and thought provoking media are needed to keep governments on-guard (certainly can't say "honest", can we).

#1 policy in our household: if "voting" is needed for an "elimination" on the programme, it is not watched.

I think it may be more related to the cost of production. Something shot with handy-cams or using unknown "actors" (*vomit*) is cheaper to produce. Cheap shit filling the airwaves makes for better bottom-line numbers for the bean-counters.

    Funding

Maybe we should ask kim d com if he would like to fund a completely NON biased tv channel.
No one would be able to make money out of it because any other financial input would add biase.
You might be able to ask for donations, or charge a small small small fee to watch.
It would probably work best as web based anyway coz airspace is sewn up in this country.
I would be 1st in the queue to offer support and to be a part of the revolution
Would any one like to start a poll?
