I use Calculix, free FEA and quite good ... u can get it free CAElinux
I use it for everything from clips to footpegs , then u can optimise the loads , again a free web site ....Daktoa ( sp)

not as nice as say solid works , but free, works well and for me open source
I export from Varicad in STEP/stl , netgen or GSHM to mesh then export as an Abquas file then open as Calculix
Then I use a free service ( sometimes )

to get optimization
then back to varicad to redesign
then I send drawings to Engineers , and they tell me what A twat I am ...or I stuff up a dimension
