We experimented with ubuntu for a staff member who only had to RDP onto a terminal server, but nah... not worth it, and back to Windows...

I use ubuntu in a windows environment.. my only issue is the stupid ancient xerox we have doesnt have PPD's.

But since I administrate a windows network I am using RDP and VNC all the time..

Since I look after the network, it was worth it for me, since windows blows like a fat biker walking to the bar. I'd prefer to struggle with linux, that "just works" once it is going.. than have endless issues with windows..

Aside from a quick glance at folder thumbnails to ensure they've been transferred, I never look at piccies on the computers I repair. 3 reasons for this,
    a) I might forget to turn off the time-stamp
    b) I might know the person
    c) They might have dodgy animal or kiddy porn.

The latter is the main reason. If it's dodgy, then I've gotta call the cops. Shit sticks. People would associate my business with kiddy porn. People would also wonder why I was looking at photos. I don't need the hassle. If you're in the business of fixing computers, my advice is to not look at photos.

hehe, fair enough - I laugh now, but if I found out someone had been entrusted with my stuff and had gone through my files, Ib be dealing out some fuckin hidings! - you shouldnt NEED to remove pictures, files about banking, business info, etc etc when taking it to a tech to get repairs.

There is a certain amount of trust in someone who is working on your computer. IT people, such as myself, often have access to things like accounting programs, the CEO's email/documents etc..
That is why I dont look at pictures or anything else. Its not worth me finding out stuff... and its an abuse of trust. Its also why I now work for a company instead of myself. IT "professionals" - especially those who work for themselves, are often (except in rare cases) worse than used car salesmen. Its virtually impossible to make a living without ripping people off.
    Sad.. but true.

Yeah! Like RDP on Ubuntu has gotta be an nearly impossible thing to configure!

    Haha!

I encrypt everything, just on the principle of it. Too bad if you have a disk problem though.

Eh? It's like any other trade. I'd go so far as saying a lot of the big IT companies are the ones that vastly over-charge people....too many chiefs, shareholders and other over-heads. The reason IT "pros" who work for themselves sometimes struggle to make a living is that they do a hell of a lot of non-chargeable work (e.g. phone calls asking for passwords (that you've printed on underside of wireless router and job sheet), and/or undercharge when $hit happens (e.g. hard drive craps out after spending ages setting up laptop....you replace drive and repeat but can't charge customer for wasted time prior).

Any guy, in any trade who charges extra hours to a job is merely a bloody crook. Do your homework and get someone with references.

No different to the little garage down the road who charges $600 to do a head gasket instead of the Toyota dealer who wanted waaaaaaay more.

I have ZERO interest in folks emails, docs, photos. I've got to look them in the eye the next day and as my girlfriend tells me, I'm a shit liar. But you're right.....some people are nosey cunts.

Yeah, so what you're saying is its hard to be an honest, good natured bloke trying to provide a service. I got sick of the never ending battle: "cousins, uncles, sisters nephew who knows something about computers and he said ....." gah.. u know, my 25 years of experience cant compete with that, so get him to fix it.

Staff member at a client once asked: "So you can see what we do?" to which I replied, "Yeah, pretty much, in a way."

He replies: "So what did I do yesterday?" Rather stunned, I simply said: "Don't know, don't watch anyone real time."

Aside from the boss being seriously pissed I was wasting company time, seriously? I guess this guy would do that sort of thing, but I have a million other things to do. As long as you're not setting out to break stuff (which requires my time to fix), breaking the law or screwing the business, I don't really care...
