I see our liberal laws and do wonder, then again i see youtube clips of stoning of women because they slept around, or men punished because they share a bed. Because the cane and strap was out in my time (1970's and 1980's) does not mean I want my kids to have the same.

But then again, if I got a fine for speeding on my really fast Hyosung GV250 and I had the option of paying a large fine or getting whacked across the back with the cane - I would opt for the cane. They do caning in malay or some place like this to this day.

I find those Islamic countries really harsh.

You'd only do that once mate.
It's not a cane as we know it,it's a Ratan and will cut you to the bone.
People die from half a dozen stokes.
Those Islamic types go over the top a bit with their stoning to death stuff,,,but chopping thieves hands off has a certain appeal I reckon.

Having seen "The Cane" being administered in Singapore ... I can assure you ... you DON'T want the cane. Hospital attention is usually required after the sentence has been carried out. Sometimes the punishment is halted before the full sentence is completed ... to give time for the recipient time to recover before the remainder of the sentence is applied.

And on the subject of fines in those countries ... you pay the fines before you leave court.

Or ... it's off to jail untill the fine is paid.

A simple system ... but it seems to work.

Used to be like that here as well.
You had a set time to pay fines then if you didn't cough you did it inside at $25 per day.
I think it stopped around 74-75 as it cost more to keep people in jail than the fines were worth.
Bread an water could of kept the costs down I reckon, but around the same time we also started getting the Clarke generation running the place,an it's been all down hill ever since.

14 strokes of the cane makes walking difficult (understatement) for a week. The cane is always included with jail time ... so it gives them time to recover a bit before release. It also seems to put them off their food a bit too ... win win all round ... (cuts jail costs down)

If you read what the entire article states a sentence of 14 months for this man is perfectly adequate for demanding money in a 'commanding tone' while in a drunken stupor, when he's obviously sick with addiction.

Extra time in jail would do nothing but cost the state more money, he obviously wouldn't learn anything more due to his many stints in prison. What he needs is a full blown rehabilitation with monitoring.

i'm all for it. the present "justice" system is f*cked.

presumed guilty until you can prove yourself innocent. no shit.

crime pays in NZ, and until that is not the case, crime will continue.
i'm all for crims having things removed from them (hands, balls etc)
but the laws need to suit. i don't want to be shot for travelling 160km/h, i do want the guy that stole my last bike to have an arm off. (cops never caught him, never found the bike, and frankly, didn't give too much of a shit. if i had some weed lying on the bench they would drag ME to court. fair? *roll tui ad)

but the worst crims wear suits. they work at a place called "parliament" and rob the whole country blind with no recourse...

Yeah. Pretty much the conclusion I came to when I read it last night. It appears that alchohol fucks him up more than the average person and that when off it he behaves. Even has good manners (respectful nature) when shit faced.
Political correctness: a doctrine which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd from the clean end.
