I need a new chain for 1998 GSXR600 SRAD

Factory chain is a 525. I've seen that prices vary alarmingly, so how much should I expect to pay for a decent chain that isn't going to snap or wear out very quickly? I'm trying to do things on a tight budget here. I got quoted around $220 for an X ring and $190 for an O ring chain. Does that seem like a reasonable price, or can I skimp out a little?

anything over 520 and i dont bother stocking O rings, only X as the price difference is negligible.

If you did a 520 conversion, a DID 520 O retails for about $125.

If I were to do a "conversion", would I need to replace the sprockets as well? I went to see a bike mechanic today and after having a look at the chain and sprockets he said my chain is rooted but the sprockets are in a good condition and don't need to be replaced. With an X ring chain can I use ordinary motorcycle chain lube, or do I need a special lube? Is it safe to clean an X ring chain with a plastic brush and kerosene?

Get a kit of eBay dude with what ever gearing you want, as far as I know you want to change the sprockets.
My 600 is running a 530 set up, dunno what it's worth, I got everything off eBay and forgot I had it...

Don't any shaft drive bikes do wheelies? It does semi decent power wheelies in 1st gear as is. Wouldn't want to give that up!

if u change chain size then yes, u need to change sprockets.

i buy my kits online, under 200 bucks should get u 2 sprockets and a chain. pretty sure I have 530 or the cheapest size..

I tried my hand at the light weight alloy sprockets and thin chain but u chew thru them quicker than tyres

I really can't afford to buy new sprockets and since the mechanic who had a look at my bike (Road and Race Motorcycles) suggested I go for just the new chain and put it on the old sprockets I might as well take his advice since the sprockets are in a good condition.

If you're skint and the chain's fucked then buy the cheapest one that'll fit and when it wears out be ready to buy better quality & new sprockets. Ideally you'd want to replace the chain & sprockets together but these are indeed difficult financial times. Fucking Greeks.

I was thinking that. I don't want to buy something really cheap that's going to snap or wear out really quickly, and since my bike only puts out around 100bhp and not much torque I don't see the need to buy something extra heavy duty that's going to cost a bomb.
