Ummmm why don't they upgrade the rail first. Notice that lost a few billion recently.
Or do they want to promote everyone driving to work rather than using the govt transport (that makes them more money).

    ETS in
    Upgrade motorways.
Sounds like a double standard to me.

upgrade the rail? do you write for Tui? They want the people to get to work. They got new trains and their on time stats have gone down also the new trains don't like the cold shitty weather.

ETS vs motor upgrade, no double standard. Yeah that makes sense. You aren't going stop the traffic, not with our railways, so rather than having them idling along it is better for ETS if they move at a more efficient pace. And anyhow if they can't speed how can you ticket them? Of course there is also the fact the ETS has nothing what so ever to do with lessening pollution, global warming/climate change or whatever it is this week, was only the excuse for a new trading scheme

Upgrading the "trains" to fix a broken rail system is like give a cancer patient paracetamol.

By UPGRADE, I mean to international standards. Not the bandaid solutions your crying about.
Haven't spent the last month in CT and commuting daily to NY......a system which is consider 'dated' it still makes NZ seem like a joke. And still a majority of people use it. Likewise pretty much any city I have been to in the world has a better system then NZ. Its a bloody joke. Why the hell are we paying taxes at an increased level from everyone else when we can't even get basic services to an international standard.

ETS could (can't emphasize the 'could' enough) have been environment beneficial. It was however not implemented that way. Much like ACC could have been a great healthcare scheme. Of course if someone ever expect the government to do anything correctly - chances are they're delusional.

As for your argument that rail won't fix anything. Have you ever consider the concept that if it were to be done properly - there might actually be less cars on the road. Thus people would not be idling in traffic anymore???

Of course if I refer to a previous point - I would have to be delusional that ANY NZ govt could do such a great feat. So lets just upgrade another road here and remain backwards.

"Keep those blinkers on NZ, nothing to learn from overseas."

"What?! That stuff behind me??!!! Its nothing? Its rubbish? You don't want that infrastructure! Its crap......you want more roads don't you?....No you don't want international standards rail you want more roads....we can give you more roads"

Besides we can't keep the money in NZ if we have to order more rail stuff - we bankrupted them back in the 90's.

bwaaaa ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa... perhaps they'll sell the train set to build more roads... why would you make your assets cheaper?

Do you even know the road in question?

The Wellington region has nearly 500,000 people (http://www.stats.govt.nz/Census/2006...egion&ParentID). It's a small city by international standards but when there are just 2 highways in and out, with the main route is mostly a single lane each way, that's just bollocks. It should have been done decades ago and the cost is only going up.

And your'e comparing a densely populated area of 10's of millions of people (NY and environs) with a small city and a collection of small townships and sparsely populated areas (Greater Wellington)? Expecting similar services is just non-sensical.

Public transport in the outlying areas is a nightmare due to the circuitous routes required to service a small community with low numbers. There is no easy fix, it's the nature of the beast. So you're stuck with driving to the train station and leaving your car out in the weather for thieves and vandals. Then once you've done the whole stop start thing into the city with some stranger's brief case wedged in your groin, then what? Unless you work close to the Railway Station you've gotta wait to catch a bus that will only go vaguely close to your destination. So it's on shank's pony in the typical Welly weather.

    Or take the car.

    You're dreamin if:
1/ You think any public transport initiative is gonna turn back the clock to 1965 when that stretch of road was last adequate.
2/ You think a small population can afford a world class train/public transport system in a large geographical area.
3/ You you think a train system is gonna help a builder (for example) get tradespeople, materials, labour, inspectors etc etc to a building site on the Kapiti Coast. Or a carpet cleaner, plumber, rural postie or real estate agent etc etc do any work at all in the wasted hours of gridlock.

Totally agree. Just try getting from J'ville to Petone by public transport. Bus & train, or bus, train & train. Probably $20.00 a day, and one &1/2 hours of travelling. Fiiteen to twenty minutes each way by bike or car, and $12.00 a week on the bike.

Public transport only works if you are lucky enough to live within walking distance of a railway station. Bus sevices are slow, and damned expensive.

Public Transport: A means of getting from not quite where you are to not quite where you want to be, not quite when you need to get there.
