FFM helmets?

G'day Gents.

I plan to order an FFM MX630 S-Moto from my local bike shop (apparently a Forbes and Davies dealer, which is where I found the helmets) tomorrow. I was told that FFM are a New Zealand company, which naturally makes me assume they're pretty good.

My question is, how accurate is my assumption? Does anyone have any experience with these helmets?

I don't really have the money for one of those spangly-ass Shoei or Arai helmets. Or anything more than about $200. So these naturally seemed the logical choice.
I am upgrading from a Shoei RX-R that has most likely seen at least two decades (was free second hand), and is a little on the small side.

Hitcher's helmet buying guide:

1. Does it fit your head?
2. Does it fit your ego and the type of rider you want to be seen as?
3. Does it have all the features you need?
4. Does it have all of the bog standard Snell and DOT standards ratings?
5. Can you afford it?

If you get a no for any of those, then don't buy it. Simple.

I wore ffm helmets for years, now I wear hearing aids.

I believe they were made in Waihi , not sure about these days. If $200 is your limit, then probably as good as any of the other brands in this price range.

I do have a Zeus adventure helmet from this price range which fits nicer than my $700 helmet. If riding at 100k's plus, the peak may put an additional strain on your neck.

I have a 1tonne helmet cost me 168$ and its quite nice to wear. Know nothing about FFM

i ride with one. quieter than the shark, probably louder than my HJC, but i crashed that so can't compare.

haven't had to put it to the real test, *touch wood, but anything that stops your head hitting the ground and your jaw being ground down with pavement is a good thing eh?

they are no longer made in NZ

from memory it was about 7-8 years ago the last NZ made ones came out,

(and motorcycle helmets were one of the last things to have an import tax on them when they were made in NZ)

they are not a bad helmet for the money imho

I've had my Tourpro 3 for just under a year and I am now looking to replace it. The tourpro was cheap, so I'm not too worried, but I don't like the feel of the higher range FFMs either.

If you look around there are some really good helmets available in the $299 price bracket.

Still have an FFM under the bench for emergency use....but haven't used it for 12 years. It was one of the first adventure helmets, before adventure riding became a sport of the rich and famous - it had both visor and peak. Wore it on and off road, and raced on a dirt track with it...great helmet.

Haven't used or heard much about FFM helmets, but my HJC is cheap and passes DOT and Snell standards, if that interests you at all..

Was $150/180 a couple months ago. Fit more comfortably on my head than a $800 Shoei too. Not to mention the visors are cheaper.

I have a Tourpro 2 while im saving for a better one. But quite like it. Much quieter than my AGV.

Have had the FFM Tourpro 3 for a year and it cost $99. Is comfortable and quiet enough around town. Always wear plugs on open road so not an issue. Everything still works and it looks as good as the day I bought it so no complaints from me. Had an AGV for a week and it was so uncomfortable I had to sel it off. Maybe my head is a weird shape?? Mate bought a new Shoei for $800 and dropped it off his seat onto the pavement, down some stairs and onto the roadway in the first week!!

Got mine yesterday - Awesome helmet!

a few things to mention:

-Definitely a good idea having some plugs on the open road. It's a bit loud.
-no gnarly wind resistance until you turn your head, and even then, it's not as bad as a motorcoss helmet.
-Good venting and awesome visor replacements available (I got the silver mirror one)
-comfy as F*ck
-looks super bad-ass
-makes you go faster
