We could buy a bloody nice house there even if we got RV for our house here....$375K gets you a 3 bed/2 bathroom newish house.
We like the smaller towns...they somehow offer so much more than a city does...if you know what I mean.
Big plus is...the roads around that area.
I have a mate who lives a few km out of Waipuk, the town is fairly nice (Better than Waipawa though, fucking Munted Mud Mob) but the countryside and little slices of land you can get are beautiful

Friends are going to Perth for a two year contract. Once its done they will buy a place north of Brisvegas they reckon. Long as its big enough for a spare room and ensuite, I'm happy.

Oh FFS - Move to Hawkes Bay, buy a big old house on 50 acres with a HUGE shed filled with a pool table, fridge and a few fold out couches so we can all pop over for the weekend eh?

deal. I'll plant half the 50 acres in grapes and the other in nut trees and do the fullon Good Life thing.

Yup - make sure its on a slope with a good view and I'll pop over regularly to help with the chores in return for allowing you to get me pissed and I can show you some choice roads too....

    although not when I'm pissed...

if it wasn't it likely would be if I was put in charge of anything involving large quantities of high pressure water.

You could do a lot worse, jobs don't fall on gold paved roads and accomodation could be an issue...

When I first saw this thread my immediate reaction was Hawkes Bay. Sunshine, beaches, beautiful countryside, and enough people to provide work.

The downside is its a fair way from the main centres and international airports if big events and kultcha are important to you.

Tauranga is equally nice with a good local economy and not too far from the big smoke. But Hamilton (despite its boring image) is possibly even better with an interesting west coast nearby and easy access to Auckland events.

But if you asked me the same question...Christchurch has always been my answer. And remains so despite the earthquakes. A lovely large city with plenty of choices and people. And its in the South Island which I would be loath to leave. Banks Peninsula is a joy to explore, the Southern Alps an hour away, the Kaikouras, vast open spaces yadda yadda...and an international airport.

My ultimate choice (forgetting about career) is Central Otago and with 25 years planning I've pretty much got that sorted.

    Not Dubai!

Wife and I did this a few years ago, returning from living in Sweden. We settled eventually in Paihia. Good stuff in Bay of Islands, fishing, big enough for work options, cheap(ish) real estate, great weather, colourful populace, and not too far away from Big Smoke. Also, the Auks only swamp the place for two weeks over Xmas, then bugger off to Coromandel and further north. Bad bits, um, not really.
Great bike roads too, and bugger all traffic.
Dont go to Kerikeri, people will laugh at you.
    lucky bastard
