    Low Profile PCI

    Gudday,

Just want some info on low profile pci slots.

    Back story:

Computer I'm using was purchased with me unaware there was such thing as a low profile (business computer) pci slots. This left me unable to use a 24bit 96khz sound card that I have, so I'm looking for options to either somehow use it in this computer, or install a firewire card so I can run one of the later model external 24bit 96khz cards.

So I've searched for firewire cards. I've found some titled "low profile" but their descriptions simply say that they have a low profile bracket.

Is the only difference between low profile and non low profile, just the bracket height (and I guess card height)?

If a card is supplied with an optional low profile bracket, it's pretty safe to assume that it will fit into a low profile case once the bracket is swapped over - bracket is usually attached with two screws.

What brand of case? Some HPs that I know of had a removable card cage that would take full height (but not full length) cards laying sideways. No doubt other brands had the same thing.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

Yes, if the product is supplied with a low profile bracket as well (ie, capable of both normal height and short) then you're safe to assume it will work. Depending on card, sometimes an interface drops off, usually video cards, and you have to be a bit rangi to get all if you want them. Depends how the outputs on the card are laid out.

Ah, thought there might be a difference in pin arrangement, size, and spacing.

Waiting to hear back, and two of the cards I'm looking at actually are USB 2.0. But good to know I can go firewire if I need to.

In saying that... I don't see how you're gonna get zero latency recording 16 inputs at 24/96 with monitoring. Apparently one of them can do 16.. the other 6. Even 6 sounds a bit dubious given it's USB.

I've used the old Mbox 1, Mbox 2, and they got laggy just with two inputs!

    Thanks all..

Think I've settled on a solution.

Found a 24bit 96khz 16 channel AD/DA converter with multiple returns and even better it is firewire & usb 2.0

    Probably will go with that!
