Too good to be true? Too cheap to be good.

OK, I'm searching for a cheap but protective jacket to wear on my commute across Wellington. No open road/ motorway riding, no off road. Strictly around the city, on a 50cc Piaggio if you want to know. I also prefer to layer warm stuff underneath so thermal p

    And I found this:

    http://motorcyclegear.co.nz/roadbike...ss-jacket.html

If you don't want to follow the link it is

SHIFT EQUATOR SS JACKET - for $89.

Yes, you read that right under $90.

And it says it is waterproof and boasts:

    - Removable CE approved shoulder and elbow armor

    - Ballistic nylon reinforcements on shoulders and elbows for added protection

So, yes, I have heard 'You get what you pay for' more times than I can remember but I just want basic.

Anybody bought this or something similar?

    Thanks.

    Jack

    GET IT.

    Seriously.

I tried on something similar at Cycletreads. Remember, it's on sale at that price, not always that price. Only thing to remember is that jackets fit differently, is there anywhere you can go to try one on?

Do note - there is no back armour on this. I recommend you get a back armour off trade me that you wear under the jacket. If it's the difference between wearing another layer or a broken spine I'd pick wearing another layer.

Don't be afraid of the cheap stuff. My MBW jacket has had a punishing for two years, and its mint! It's warm, thick, and strong.

Watch out for cheap cloth gloves though. Gloves MUST be super strong textile or leather - no skinny little namby pamby gloves!

Especially if you like using your hands for things that require nerve endings. Like closing your hand. or eating.

I can vouch for breaking the back bit. Not a good idea...

Looks good, I think Shift is a decent brand too but haven't bought any of their stuff myself.

Just don't fall off and you won't have to worry about breaking your back.

Looks OK, however my question(s) would be this

The front zip appears from the picture to not have a 'storm flap' over the top of it, if there isnt, it will let water through the zip.
My other thought would be that it doesnt look to have reinforcing/ or doubled layered material on the high abrasion areas.....

Shift gear is top notch. I have a leather shift jacket, very well made.

Yeah i brought one of those backdraft jacket, shoes and Jeans and all well constructed.

That backdraft jacket is great through summer for round town with being so well vented. Don't think I would use it open road though it doesn't have that much protection in it, but thats just me personally.

OP only needs it for riding a 50cc around Welly.

    Thanks for all the advice.

I ordered it yesterday, it arrived at lunchtime today and it is perfect.

It is very much a summer weight jacket but that is what I want as I'd prefer to layer themals underneath.

It has protection in the places that require it and the quality seems top notch.

This is my first Cyclethreads purchase and based on this I would recommend them.
