Well if he went to the funeral he'd get caned for being a shameless media whore.
Might as well go see your boy and enjoy your life.
And speaking of GET A LIFE!
"I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it." -- Erwin Schrodinger talking about quantum mechanics.
He should go to see his son play - and preferably not come back!
The man's a sociopathic aresehole and a complete disgrace as a prime minister!
But....everyone seems to like him.
Tells you a lot about the NZ public........
“- He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.”
I think that the family of the fallen would agree that it is better to spend time with your son at his important life events while he is alive. I'm sure they have been thinking of those times that they placed other obligations ahead of their loved ones. Now those other obligations don't seem quite as important, do they?
Don't make this about John Key or defence policy, or whatever; this is about Rory & Pralli. Two guys who gave everything, doing a job they believed in. The country & the NZDF honours their sacrifice. I have no doubt that there will be plenty of people that they respected far more than the PM who will be present at the funeral.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Keep on chooglin'
Let's put this into perspective. This is not just any funeral. This is the funeral of two killed in a single incident, the greatest number of NZ deaths in a single incident since the Vietnam war. The population of the USA is roughly 100 times more than the population of NZ. Does anyone here think Obama would be watching a baseball game during the funeral of 200 US soldiers killed in a single incident...
What you think is or is not appropriate really depends on your point of view and what you think is important. You may view the soldiers as a couple of morons who signed up for death, got dead and so what. Or you could think of them as men who laid down their lives in the service of their country.
My view is that they were sent there to fight for a free trade agreement with the USA, by the government headed by JK. Since he is ultimately responsible he should take everything that goes with it, including the sacrifice of a baseball game. The men he sent to their deaths won't be looking at any more baseball games and they will never again be around for their children. JK is ultimately responsible for that.
On the other hand the families may not have wanted him around and in that case I have no problem with his decision. Maybe he should just stick to baseball...
Ride fast or be last.
If you want to allocate 'responsibility' you should bear in mind that it was in fact Helen Clark and her government who originally sent NZ troops to Afghanistan in 2001 and continued to do so through the remainder of their time in power. JK and his government have merely extended the commitment Auntie Helen et al made.

False argument. As our dear Prime Minister owns property in the US of A and is reportedly worth over 50 million this will in no way be a trip of a life time for his son, just another trip to the US of A for another baseball game.
John Key chose to be PM and as such he has obligations and he should be teaching his kid about honouring those obligations.
Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people. --- Unknown sage
False argument. Just what obligations should JK be honouring? And under what tradition, rule or act do these obligations fall?
If you are meaning that JK is obligated to attend thefunerals of the two fallen soldiers, then that has already been covered, and there is NO obligation of the PM to attend. His obligation there is to honour all of our servicemen killed in action on our national day of rememberence: ANZAC day.
Time to ride
Let's be sure what we're talking about here. It's the under 17 'Senior League World Series' of baseball. It's not 'another game of baseball'. It may well be the pinnacle of Key jnr's sporting life with his team representing the 'Asia-Pacific' region. In regard to the soldiers, JK has visited the families in private which in my view is a bigger thing than attending the public spectacle of a funeral.
