I think you answered your own question there my friend
I stuck APE manual CCTs on my VTR1000 when I had it, because the previous owner had had a "catastrophic failure" of the front CCT, reulting in a lunched piston and valves. I coont be ferkt with worrying about it, so went manual. However (but!) I found it hard working out how tight to make them. The idea was to wind them in by hand until the engine got quieter, then nip 'em up, but the engine was so rattly anyway I couldn't tell.
Honda CCTs (and probably the whole cam drive system) really SUCK! I've had eight Hondas, and every single one rattled, apart from three: one was a two-smoke, and the other two had gear-driven cams (YAY!! Gear-driven cams!! Woo hoo!!)![]()
... and that's what I think.
Or summat.
Or maybe not...
Dunno really....![]()
I put one on both my f2 and my f3 engine, definately recommend it - my f3 was rattly as anything around 40000 miles, put it on (I got a krieger or something one the second time) and hassle free rattle free 8 months (just sold bike). the krieger one came with better instructions too which I felt a lot safer about installing it and getting it correct - involved taking the right side timing cover off but made sure it wasn't over tightened which worried me on the first one (APE) that I got that had rubbish instructions
Any chance you remember what those instructions said ice? im having similar thoughts and cant find any indepth instructions on the net.
(the one im gonna get is an APE i think)
"The idea was to wind them in by hand until the engine got quieter"
Vifferman, did you tighten it while the engine was running??
I can't sorry,Try googling krieger cam chain tensioner maybe, this is the one I bought, it was cheaper too http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...id=41245539545 from iPhone sorry te item numbe was Item #: 300762694267. The ape ones you tighten by hand engine off then adjust with engine on but still danger of over tightening.
the CBR F series engines were renowned for crapping out the factory cct. the APE manual CCT is cheap, easy to instal, and easy to manintain. Me, and a couple of friends who had earlier cbr 600s put them in and found them to be great
