    Control tyres: Aussie ditches them at national level

    There was some talk on the BSB topic about control tyres, well Aussie confirms they are ditching them at a national level next year.

    Thery are however, retaining a a price cap and max number per meeting.

    LATE BRAKING NEWS - REVIEWS - FORUM
    -- No control tyre for 2013 ASBK
    -- Pirelli, Michelin and Dunlop tyres for 2013 ASBK

    Riders will have the choice to race on Pirelli, Michelin and Dunlop tyres in the 2013 Australian Superbike Championships (ASBK).

    International Entertainment Group (IEG) will place a cap on the number and price of tyres to ensure costs are kept to a minimum for all participating.

    IEG Managing Director Yarrive Konsky said: “The move was made to allow riders a wider choice and will bring the cost of racing down, as well as add another exciting element to the tactics and strategy of racing.

    “IEG thanks Pirelli and Michelin for their interest in being involved once more and Dunlop for their continued support.”

    The cap and number of tyres per class are as follows:

    Superbike & Prostock: Under $580 per set / 3 front & 4 rear / 2 compounds may be homologated per brand

    Supersport & Superstock: Under $480 per set / 3 front & 3 rear / 2 compounds may be homologated per brand

    Superlites: Under $350 per set / 2 front & 2 rear / 2 compounds will be homologated per brand

    250 Production: Control tyre by Pirelli / 1 front & 1 rear / 2 compounds may be homologated

    Good job , control tyres are wrong way to go.Look at the hassles with MotoGP , and the WSBK wets this year especially at Silverstone! I also see that the Irish Superbikes turned down 50,000 quid to go to a control tyre , riders wanted a choice of what they wanted to run. The battle for bragging rights is alive and well in New Zealand , and long may it continue. I do however like the Compound restriction and if possible a $ price cap , if it could work. But at the end of the day riders should be allowed to run on what they like.

    Having been a tyre importer in a previous life , I can tell you the margins that were run on race tyres was kept to a minimum where possible . The bulk of the tyre stock (MX , Road etc)carried the race stuff which was a very seasonal thing sales wise , and if you weren't the top dog , you could tie up a lot of capital in slow moving stock. Remember tyre importers are in business to sell tyres for the Joe and Joanne average motorcyclist , racing is great and great for image , but I'm sure the cost to benefits still aren't that crash hot.

    Just my opinion.

    Yeah Pete , It was a different time ,if I had my time again , I would not put so much in to racing but what can you do when you are addicted ,but as I said Racing is good for image and in that respect it doesn't hurt.

    And you had an awesome run with not only your self, but the King Bros and guys like Dave Cole..a six hours victory with Dave Hicks/Tony Rees if my memory serves me correctly? And you're still bloody going! Is there an 'AA' for motorcycle racing junkies?

    Yeah Tony and Dave (wonder what he is up to these days) , winning the last Castrol 6 Hour was fantastic on F003 and R003's. Tony McMurdo won heaps of Championships in F3 for us on slicks. The 250 proddie was a goodie for us as well, The off road was amazing success story for us. I see that Shinko (Yokohama Moulds) still make the F540/R540's I remember when we got the first ones in 1984! and even the 003's. We got the first ones of those 003 race tyres in 1987! Hey don't forget the Boyle Kawasaki Team of you , zombie , Dennis Newton and others.

    Yeah still going , but did have about seven years away from the sport , Now that I'm not in the MC Industry Bike racing is just a hobby to me now , and I wouldn't have it any other way.

    there are many of us who regret the amount of money we sank into racing,either as riders or team manager/sponsors or both.

    Still,we have our priceless memories that far outweigh all those losers that spent all their weekends at the pub.

    Bloody Japs with Stupid names " Gettar" was a domestic Japanes Branding. Yeah we did get some experimental tyre compounds and boy did we have some crap as well. Pity we didn't have the suspension that is around today , it would have been interesting where it would have all led , instead of the tyre taking all the stresses. But anyway good times. Looking ahead not back.

    I rode with him a few times when he had that. Doubt he drinks much at all now. Does the Coast to Coast races etc...a real fitness freak.
