Non working audio output.

So I have this new Windows 7 PC for my Son. (See other thread, all basically fine now, but...)

It's got that block of six 3.5 mm audio outputs as you see these days; to allow you to plug in a 2 speaker setup, or 5.1 or 7.1. Whatever.

When I plug the boys speakers (just regular L/R 2-speaker thing) into the output that should be used as front speakers (in a multiple speaker setup) or the stereo speakers in a 2 speaker setup, I get no sound at all.

I do get the pop-up that lets me tell the system what I've plugged it, so it is recognising something has been plugged in.

For now, I've just got the speakers in the socket that would normally be used for the rear speakers. I get the pop-up, and I tell the thing it's actually front speakers, and all is fine.

The only other clue, is that if the speakers are plugged into the headphone socket on the front of the PC, I get sound as normal.


Anyone got suggestions as to what's up?


It would seem odd that one output for some reason won't work, but the others do. But I've found no clues in the software. Googling, it seems the opposite problem is normal. People get sound out of the rear port, but the system won't recognise headphones plugged into the front (and won't mute the rear output) so have to tick a "recognise headphones" checkbox in the setup. That's not the problem we have.

Have similar problem myself, no solution either so I watch with interest.

Have you told it you are using a two speaker setup? It is usually some profile in the audio configuration for the card.

Yep, thanks. I think I've got 'em right (same pop-ups I use to get the speakers working on the "wrong" socket).

This pic is from a different board, but the sockets are the same. The green one is supposed to be for 2-speaker set ups; but I'm currently using the black one.

(I may experiment with turning OFF the "detect front panel socket" option.)

Your sound card mixer found in system settings is somewhere to look.

Also, you may need a breakout cable to make a 2 speaker system work effectively on a 5.1 system. That is what I had on my Soundblaster 5.1 card when I got rid of the rear & center channels for a simple LR system.

not entirely sure what your problem is. shit works. it's windows. you're one up on most people.

the front panel will probably be jumped to the mobo. BIOS settings may come into it. elsewise download latest winblows audio drivers.

Sadly, new drivers (dated just last Month) didn't fix it.

I'll just ignore it for now.
