Shithouse lense and camera it would seem. I can get a better picture from the scope on my .270 remington. (Not that I have ever tried to take a photo from 800m away - so take my comments with a big grain of salt :P
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.

So I somehow think that grainy image taken by a professional paprazzi must be considerably further away than a mere 800m

You have an SX20? Me too! You must be a man of outstanding taste and insight. Now did the subject know she was being photographed?

At that distance and over water I would say not. However that image I have posted is only part of the frame. I have already cropped it down to around 1/3 of the original size and removed the other board riders from the pic.

I posted up this part of the pic to show the quality that is obtainable from a camera that is just a tad better than a Point and Shoot, so a proffessional photographer with good gear would have no trouble getting quality shots at long range instead of the grainy pixilated images that were published.

Yes. I was quite surprised with what I could pull into view with the SX20 (which for the benefit of those who don't know lies in between a 'point and shoot' and a DSLR). The limiting factor was my own shaking hands. Of course the more 'interesting' the subject, the more the hands shake. I reckon if I was the lowlife taking those photos of Kate I would have been shaking so much you'd have mistaken me for an epileptic.
