Turiana Banks Race Report: Bridgestone Winter Series Round 4 2012

The day before round four I went to the test day to have a bit more practice. I am very glad that I went because on the race day I didn't feel as nervous as I usually do, I felt really excited . I was feeling good about my riding and I used the test day to practice things like braking earlier and going faster through Toyota and the hairpin. My plan for the weekend was to get closer to my sister Mihi, time wise that is.

    Race Day:

    Practice/qualifying

It was sunny but a bit cold for our practice/qualifying. When I saw my times for qualifying I was so happy and amazed that for the first time I wasn't right at the back of the grid! I was happy and that was a good start to my day with a fastest time of 1:43.214. This was about four seconds faster than my last personal best (PB).

    Race 1

I was energised and ready to go for the first race. But due to some not very good starts from the race before us, our race was pushed back till after lunch. When we finally got our first race it was awesome. I kept on pushing more through the in-field so I could hopefully get past Sue Forrest (Skippy). I didn't manage to get faster but I didn't get slower and I had a fastest time of 1:43.860

    Race 2

I was determined to pass or beat Sue in race two. I was trying to brake later coming into toyota by counting "one" after my braking marker. The hard thing was that every time I got faster she did as well, but that didn't matter, it just gave me more motivation to try and push myself more. At the end of that race I only dropped one second and didn't pass Sue, but every second counts. I had a fastest time of 1:42.197

    Race 3

I was a while off Mihi’s times this round and I didn't think that I would catch up to her YET, so I was still focusing on getting past Sue. Moto Academy Steve told me that I was very close to passing Sue, and just needed to brake a little bit later to out-brake her and get past. I was trying to do that, but Sue was still getting faster as I was getting faster. I got down to 1:40.739

I had a great two days even though I didn't accomplish my goal. There is always next round and I’m getting closer every time. I am also setting a new personal best every round which is a good accomplishment for me. I would like to thank K2 racing (Wharfy and Katie), Steve of Moto Academy, VMCC and Mum and Dad.

Excellent ! Great effort, I am so glad to hear you are really enjoying racing. (I can't imagine why you wouldn't but it is great to read it ) Good write up as well. Some people think race reports are a bit naff but I believe they are a great tool to help analyse ones riding.
Look forward to catching up with you all at round 5

That's a nice race report and it's awesome to see you really enjoying yourself. There are not many girls in NZ with the courage to pick motorcycle racing as a sport, so you should be very proud of yourself. Stay smooth and be patient,,the speed will come in good time,,especially as your confidence builds.

keep up the good work, young lady. It has been just awesome to watch your improvement every race day! Remember that steps towards achieving goals are also really important!

Hey Ranga. You know I agree with what Kevin, Rob and Janet have said. Keep listening to that bossy coach fullah, and keep doing the other things you are doing. It's a huge achievement to be 13, with less than a years riding experience under your belt, and riding as well as you are. Everyone knows the gingers have an extra go fast gene.
