I'm actually completely with you on this. Taking the example of the shooter in New York where the cops hit 9 others, he had shot one person (who had fired him) and was just walking along the path. If, rather than confront him, the police had ID'd him or followed until he was in a clearer area, they may have saved a lot of pain.
That said, given the widespread examples of police missing at close rage, I think it's more likely that they are put in near impossible situations than that they are completely incompetent. I wouldn't know though...
Nice link.

From the Snopes link (my emphasis):
Highly trained, yet only 62% of shots hit their target.... Freeland remained under the oak tree overnight, where a 10-member SWAT team found him the next morning. When they saw Freeland raise his right hand clutching a gun (one they would later learn belonged to the slain deputy), nine of the ten officers fired, hitting him with 68 of 110 shots. ...
Not criticising, just adding my vote to the don't fire if potential harm to bystanders will be worse than if not firing folk.
(In the Freeland case, he was in woods; so they could have chucked grenades at him for all I care.)
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
Love it, training guns.
First you get a wooden handgun.
then you get a 22LR.
Then you get a Glock.
On another note, the cops expect the public to
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
Anyone not doing the above, regardless of the colour of their pants, should be held to that. The choice to fire when not safe (as judged by the above rules) is not one to be taken lightly.

Like choosing to prosecute a father wanting to visit his sons grave. Either the cops fucked up, or the papers got this wrong.
I'm all for giving the cops a bit of slack, because they operate in a grey area all the time. Would be nice if they gave us a bit of slack sometimes as well.

Yes they do. I have certainly experienced police officers "cutting me some slack" .. and yes, it never gets into the media .. and the only comments on forums like this are about how bad the popos are
(or maybe it's just because I'm getting older and the cops are more tolerant of grey haired old bikers - or maybe it's because I dont give them shit on the side of the road any more ...)

Not sure I've been let off lately. But haven't had many run ins. Last one was over a year ago, a wanker of a cop in the south island gave me a speeding ticket on the say so of some numpty that didn't like being overtaken and called it in. Wasn't ever going to get off that one. Had the speed alarm on in the rental, so I now I was below 105, still got a ticket for 111 though form a cop coming the other way without radar installed in the car. That guy must have had secret powers.
