A little while ago Scotty came up with a solution, direct mounting on the swingarm and new top mount. See attached photo. Shock was a modified DMN, but struggling to find them now. Shame as they had lots of adjustment (preload, damping high and low)....

Currently he is working on a linkage system (NX4 spec) with simple modifications to swingarm and bottom engine mount. Longer shocks are much easier to find.

    Looks good Scott!

So the front end is back together. The oil that came out of those forks looked like sewerage!
200ml came out of each fork leg when I emptied them and I put 220ml back in based on this FXR150 manual I found on FXR150.co.nz:

The front does feel better, as do the brakes. After a few laps of the driveway, it was still fairly easy to bottom out the front, or at least put it onto the hard last resort spring. There's racing at Mt Wellington next weekend so I'll do some laps and feel the bike out.

Is adding fork oil in 10ml increments a reasonable amount for experimenting?

Bad news old bean. Quantity is not the ideal way to set the level.

Spring out, fork fully compressed the oil level should be about 120mm from the top lip. Then to get them to stop bottoming add oil decrease the air gap 5mm at a time.

Do it by volume and you will find one comes up on hydraulic lock before the other. Tends to be less than an ideal.

Thanks Drew. I clearly missed that point which is so obviously in that manual extract. Will measure up and go from there.

Manual reckons 138mm. Seems a bit low to me, I almost always start at 120. But there's no harm starting lower.

Cheers Henk. Yah know how I asked you to put the cable for on your forks so I can see how much travel you were using at my welly? I noticed it was way up the forks too. Have you done anything besides oil level on your front end?

Hey Chris. How much sag is in the front? No rider on board. On my FXR I ran around 27mm. Almost 40mm when crouched on it.

Static at 27 is a lot, but 13 for rider is about right. What weight spring were you using. Any chance you have those numbers transposed? 13 then 40 seems more what I would expect.

Never new the spring rate. The front rubber was always looking great on that bike. I have set up the 300 similar. RT checked it out last meeting and was happy it was all good. 25mm static is quite standard I would have thought. Also I figured keeping the fork lower in the stroke of them shitty forks was a good idea. There is not much damping at the up end of the stroke. They are stone age after all.

Forks were completely stripped, cleaned and re-oiled about 3 meets before you bought the bike. Front worked shit hot, used to slide a lot but you could pull it back out. Was the rear end that gave me problems. I also supplied you a manual.

Will measure this week when I'm not working late. Thanks for the figures.

The manual I got with the bike said the forks only took 101.5ml in each fork. Unsure how that worked, maybe different years? Keep in mind that was some time ago now and the bike has done a crap load of riding since, gotta keep it all serviced. What weight oil did you use in the front Kel?

The street attack I have on the rear is raised up on the leading edge of the tread which I read indicates that rebound is too slow. I have a spare rear shock with me that I might also swap in as a second tester. I doubt that's going to help much but you can only conclude on that after trying.

Got a fork oil gauge today so will measure it out properly and do some testing on Saturday. Hopefully I'm not too hung over.
