How much sideways movement can the con-rod withstand before it calls it quits ... ???

A small amount doesn't seem to matter, I've seen it on many engines of differing varieties...

There will be about 0.8mm clearance when it is built, basically if there is real wear it would be the plating of the rod & the rollers. As soon as that happened it would be a one way trip to F'd in several rotations, so don't look at that for a real indication of wear.

Short answer is it should be fine. Long answer, you should schedule throwing in a new rodkit every so often on a competition bike so it never poos itself. Only you will know how it gets treated & how many hours are on it. Yam should have a conservative spec on how often to rebuild.
Don't you look at my accountant.
