Lilfox and I were strolling along the river path beside the mighty Waikato this afternoon when a dude came ripping along the other way. He swerved off the path into the rough alongside to pass us and then proceeded to fail to remount the path, bounce left and head straight for the cliff into the river below. Fortunately, (sort of I guess) he tipped over left and wedged a metre short of the edge in the willow roots.
Young lad on a scooter? Mad middle-aged lycra-clad pansy? Cocky teenager on a mountain bike?
Nah. Old fulla from the local rest home on his mobility scoot. Those little wheels are no good on concrete edges. Plus I bet he target fixated as well! Better get Katman onto him I reckon. Blardy hoon!
Anyhow, he was fair stuck there, legs all tangled up with the scoot and hanging inches from the precipice. There was nobody else within a bull's roar of us so we had to try to get him out. Easier said than done. I have my left hand in a splint at present after surgery last Thursday. So I am a one armed paperhanger (bandit?) at present and had to do the lift one sided...took a while but we got him untangled and hoisted him back off the edge. Luckily he was pretty fit so helped a lot. Then another bloke came along and we got the scoot back up as well.
Old boy was pretty unphased by it - shook the hands and took off on his way up the track.
If he'd gone over the edge he would have been in deep shit 'cause the water is just down there. No way I could've got him out of that.
