Well Simon Sweetman can Kidd My Fat Spotty Arse….
His review of Mumford and Sons new album was devastating. To be fair I don’t actually rate Mr Sweetman at all as he has a very narrow taste in music coupled with a vast repertoire of nasty words and a medium to give him a voice. That the media pay for this toxic rubbish says much about the current state of the press in NZ…
However, Indie music and bands without a long safe track record can be patchy so with his words ringing in our ears it was with some trepidation we set off on the trip into town last night to watch Mumford and Sons. He is an arse…
They were better than good, they were everything you want this sort of music to be. They were involved and interacted with the crowd and each other so somehow you could still feel they had a passion for what they were doing. This isn’t fine music with finger perfect scales and lingering pitch perfect notes – it’s a more raw translation of emotion and energy by younger musicians who believe in what themselves and their style. Its infections and Vicki and I liked it a hell of a lot.
Look – you go and see Bob Dylan because hes Bob bloody Dylan and a legend. You need to see him to get the Tee shirt. These guys just turn on a tap and POW funny infectious good time music pours out in vast waves. You don’t need the tee shirt…. Add in an intimate venue and really great lighting and you have an experience worth every penny.
Yes – we had a ball and to be fair Simon is partly onto something because their CD’s don’t even go halfway in getting across what they do live. This is music you feel, it does not seem to follow all the rules and yes sometimes the songs sound a bit same same (hey listen to a young Bob Dylan for that) but its still wonderful. Its raw and powerful and you should listen to it rattling your brain loose and through bleeding ears.
Wonderful….
and Michelle likes it too..
