As long as he can keep up on the motorway I don't mind - I'm not planning on breaking any speed limits. I don't mind taking turns with some others to be TEC and stay back so he doesn't feel rushed or left behind. It will be a leisurely ride so he's welcome to come.

Definitely leisurely. We'll be as fast as our slowest rider, so as I've said above, I'm happy to be TEC (or take it in turns if other people want to help out) to make sure no one feels left behind. People can bomb on ahead if they want, but I quite like to take my time and enjoy the scenery.

I've heard Waiuku isn't the best place to stop as there isn't much there apart from the single cafe, so if anyone else has some other suggestions for our first stop, do let me know!

How does this route sound? Click me for fun times.
Avoid Waiuku entirely. And no riding the same road there and back for the most part. SH22 way is a very fun road.

Yes it is indeedy, but I would add a provisio, it is known as the goat track for good reason, and you really need to aware of wandering stock. A great bit of road to treat with respect

Hi, I'd be keen to come along if OK (bearing in mind I don't know anybody), I'm looking to get more open road experience.

"Leisurely" is definitely my scene (I'm usually happy to pull over and let faster traffic go by), but I've been told by an instructor I should try to get my speed up a bit which hopefully comes with practice, only I haven't been doing much of that on my own.

Also my bike's retrospectively LAMs approved now, which is appropriate really, since I still feel like I've got plenty to learn...

I've done a few solo trips over the years but never any further than say Taupo (from Auckland).

Age-wise I'm oldish (40s), and to quote Abe Simpson "I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.."

(Actually I might never have been "with it" in the first place...)

That looks like a fun ride. Think of me when (if) you ride past the power station and see the giant bouncy castles at the 'family fun day'

Thanks for the tip and the compliment Mom! glad you mentioned only the good things hehe.

Absolutely all are welcome! I just took part on a long ride with a great bunch of people and really found group riding is the way to improve your speed, especially around corners. Following more experienced people and trying to keep up with the helps you learn very quickly. I think there are a couple more experienced people coming (i'm still learning so wouldn't suggest following me haha, though speed is one thing I can do usually haha).

Please don't try to keep up... it's one of the biggest reasons for learners crashing. After all, experienced bikers screw up from time to time, and then you have zero chance of avoiding the same fate.

Ride your own ride, but see if an experienced biker can offer feedback to further your riding. (remembering that rider tips are like arseholes, everyone has their own)

Sorry probably phrased it badly. I didn't mean trying to tail gate, but just hanging back, watching how they go around corners and the like. I found it really put advice into action and helped me understand how to do it. But I only did it when I comfortable with my bike etc at the time and wasn't that nervous about doing it.

Completely agree that you need to have your own space and not stress yourself out.

Yes it does. However it is not a good idea.

On that ride, (for some sections anyway) I was going faster then most others. But I never exceeded a speed I was comfortable with. I left more then enough margin that I could lean over that extra bit when it became necessary. (Which it did on some of those tightening corners)
I will admit though that I was guilty of doing this on my first few on rides on my L plate. After a fairly regularly hitting corners which scared the bajezes out of me, I realized that, perhaps, I should slow it down a little.

While I am not an uber-experienced rider now, I definitely am more so then before. When Lanky and Maha were practically knee dragging on Twin Bridges the other week I ended up dropping back a fair bit, just because I was uncomfortable with the speeds they were doing.

A good road is a good road. Enjoy it at your own speed.

Please update the first post to indicate final route decision, meeting times and if you are going through Patumahoe and what time. If I go I'd like to meet you in Patumahoe. I just need a time.

No problem, I've done a few courses where they emphasise riding "at your own pace" and I'm down with that.

So long as I know where I'm going I'm happy to catch up to the group at the next stop.

Hey there, sorry I've been AWOL. It's been a crazy week and no internet at home! I will update the first post now with the route. I've never been to Hamilton - I'm mostly keen on visiting Raglan.
