Rev counter busted

So, went for an awesome ride to Raglan and back today and then halfway between Hamilton and Te Awamutu my rev counter died. Needle went from 5000 to 0 and stayed put.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? I was thinking that maybe a wire has come off? I'm just not sure where to look to fix it...

Any help is muchly appreciated

If it's a relatively new bike it'll be a wire ( electric revvy) otherwise it'll most likely be a broken rev counter cable. if this is so, it's not too hard a fix.
Just need to know what year, make and model of bike, order the cable and get one of those nice LOR guys to SHOW YOU HOW to reinstall the cable.

I had a look at the pic of your bike you posted just after you got it home. It looks like a cable type ... but I may be wrong. Check yourself. Wire one's are thin ... cable's are thick (like the speedo one) and check both ends are still connected.

It seems its a inner/outer cable for the rev counter. (part No. 28)

Got a Kawaski rev counter (omg horrfied previous posting ) fixed was electronic one sent into mike murphy electrial in palmerston north cost around 250.00 from memory , u can look up online are,s needed to be sent of to speclist.

I removed the rev counter but you should be able send the whole unit deepening if you want use your bike while its away probley a week or less
either was i be inclined to take to auto electrian first and see what they say, they can check if power getting to the rev counter cluster, in are case it was so was something wrong with the rev counter electrics

You've probably done this but have you checked to make sure the outer cable housing hasn't just come undone/loosened off? Check both ends. Otherwise what FJRider said.

So, I finally got a chance to take a look at the cable. Was all in nice and tight, I can't actually get it un done at the dial end. So I will get some crc tomorrow and give it a soak, hopefully that will loosen it up enough. And I would say that I will need to get a new cable for it. Seems like an easy enough fix though

yes have the splined collar just use multi pliers

Yay!!! All fixed!!!

New cable arrived today. Used some pliers to undo the old one (definately snapped by the way), fitted the new one, started the bike and up goes the needle! Easy fix, I know, but I feel very proud of myself

yes great work alot of the time not all the time you can see visually broken stuff or just re trace what you changed before a problem
