Ferry stike before Tri Series Round 1

For those of you who maybe travelling to Rd 1 of the Tri series from the South Island please be aware that at present the interislander will not be sailing between Sat 1st dec- Sat 7th Dec due to strike action.
This is in mediation and may change.
Strait shipping will continue to sail (lucky cos we are on that)
Pass the word to any racers travelling or friends travelling too.

Also students can get free crossings for themselves on bluebridge this summer, you still have to pay for the car/trailer/other passengers but it's still a nice wee saving, also you get a free pie on the ferry!

or just enter "FREEDRIVER" as a coupon when booking, remember to take your student id, also remember to take your receipt with you on the ferry (my bro left his in the car - no free pie)

Do you get a morning tea break at work ?
Do you get tea/coffee sugar supplied ?
Do you get more than 10 minutes for lunch ?
If you get sacked can you appeal to somebody ?
Does your workplace have a Health and Safety programme ?
Just a short list of some of the benefits that people take for granted in NZ - They were all won HARD by union members.
Read some of the history of the labour movement in NZ and see how badly workers were fucked over by (mostly foreign owned) companies.
Workers rights in NZ are being eroded at an alarming rate and unions are one of the few ways to stop it.

Well it's the time that the ferry co makes most of its money so it's the obvious time to withdraw your labour.

Those wankers might get a bit more sympathy if they didn't pick the holidays to make a point. They have been pulling the same shit forever.

Sorry Wharfy but seeing the strikes in the uk of the 70s.... and the toll on families for decades after doesnt see me share your point of view.
But you have a point also.

Why are they wankers for trying to protect their working conditions and pay ?

What do you do for a crust ? How do you negotiate your salary, holidays, overtime ?

I have a very good job in the IT bizz - but I have worked for my living - in factories and saw mills. Some of it required a great deal of skill and all of it was dangerous. I worked with guys who were married with children and HAD to work 6 days a week so they could pay their mortgage and DESPITE what John Key says employers will press their advantage ( and they do hold most of the power ).

Do you know what the most dangerous occupation is in NZ ? Not being a Cop or a Fireman or even a topdressing pilot - but a builders labourer ! ( although the mine disaster on the coast may have pushed miners to the top of the list now ) -Speaking of which - the inquiry revealed that the accident ( if you can call it that ) was primarily caused by the company cutting corners to increase profit, with scant regard to the safety of the workers !
