Great, now the coast road will be even more congested as they attempt to upgrade it - see story - http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3372655a11,00.html

How on earth are they going to upgrade the coast road to cope with the ever increasing volume of traffic? And what is the congestion going to be like while they do it - can you imagine the speed it will crawl at once they throw road works into the equation?

I totally avoid going up the coast......it's F*#@KED.......virtually the whole way is one big road work

No wonder the rest of New Zild hates Dorkland getting most of the roading budget. Building this road would save lives, not just allow time for an extra latte.

I both agree & disagree. First, there needs to be a big push to upgrade roading in many major centres such as Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington Dunedin etc. This area has suffered over the last 4 decades as the Goverment has channelled $ into other areas. Auckland suffered the worst out of this as right through the 70/80 & 90s the area had a smaller % of the roading budget than all other NZ centres. So while I agree that roading needs more $, leave out the usual, I come from somewhere ele in NZ & I'll play lets blame Auckland for all whoes, (& I wasn't even born here like most people who live in the place)

I believe that the TG solution may become a two or 3 lane one-way highway. This would involve South bound traffic only in the morning, and North bound only in the evening. There is a highway like this in Adelaide and it works well. It closes for an hour in the middle of the day for the direction change.

D'ya think your average kiwi moron driver could cope with this?

Mind you, if it was a 'tidal flow' type highway, that could be OK too; they do that with the Harbour Bridge and also do (did?) that in Tauranga with some of the roads into town, and both D'Auckland drivers and the maroons in Tga are pretty useless drivers (the latter because many of them are from D'Auckland anyway...)

Slightly off topic, but does anyone remember Melling Bridge in Wgtn in the early 80's? The middle bit was "no man's land" with no lanes where you sorted yourself out for which way you were going when you got off the bridge. (hard to describe, someone else who remembers might be able to explain exactly how it worked)

You mean it's no longer like that?
I recall it worked pretty well - as no-one could claim a right to that middle bit of the bridge, most seemed to keep clear of it, splitting into separate lanes right at the end where the lane markings started.
