Gah! Stupid PC and security shit we live with

Working on some stuff with GiJoe I came across some nifty little tools he had, available as a lock pick set. Being a bloke, I simply had to have some of my own...

Simply? Went into Repco (that's automotive). Nup, try a hardware store. Mitre 10 Mega? Nup. Suppliers don't like to give it to us because that section is all about locksmiths (or something along those lines). Went into a locksmith store... no, we're not selling you that.

Now all of a sudden I really want it. I should be able to place a special order tomorrow, but fark? If any moron could pick a lock, you'd think they would make it harder to pick locks? I have no idea how to (I just want the tools) but now I'm tempted to learn

edit: On reflection, I'm sure our security sense is far lower than Israel perhaps... oh well...

Learning how to pick locks became trendy a while back. Some famous smart guy aparently did it for fun, so people copied.

I think I may be able to dig up some e-books on it for you.

(I grabbed some books out of a big pile, from work a few years back. If I can find the CD...)
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.

I remember making some at school to break into the science lab. Worked a treat.

Initially I thought you were evil... so many toys. But they're all too specific to lock picking to be what I was after... now I'm wondering if I'll find what I want when I don't know it's name

The tools had round shanks, one was straight, one had a 45 degree bend near the end, another had a 90 degree bend... uh... something like that. The deal extreme broken key set might be interesting... http://www.dealextreme.com/p/broken-...-67041?item=12

Ooooh, and so many in this one: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/30-in-1...-126033?item=2

they actually sound like dentists tools from the description, and as they are surgical steel would be strong enough for lock work.

I have set here at work, you can get them pretty much anywhere. Padlocks with a rake and pick beats doing nothing whilst you watch TV.

You want to be careful posting that kind of stuff on here. Your neighbour will get burgled tonight, no sign of forced entry, check the residents nearby, hello hello hello.

Seen it happen before. Can't remember where but.

Simply? Went into Repco (that's automotive). Nup, try a hardware store. Mitre 10 Mega? Nup. Suppliers don't like to give it to us because that section is all about locksmiths (or something along those lines). Went into a locksmith store... no, we're not selling you that.l...

i think it's illegal to carry them, unless it's your trade. you'd certainly be given a stern interrogatory by the boys in blue....

any way. unlikely to be able to buy them. either mug a locksmith's van (in which case pick up a stack of "wax keys" too - they're softer metal than your dailys and will show up the tumbler pattern when jiggled in the lock. then it's a case of needle-filing until you get the shape that opens the lock. - get it copied to a daily use key if you're wanting in and out on the regular)

OR make some. they're very easy. spring steel is good. the kind that is oft found in skips as crate strapping.

the basic principal of a lock has not changed in a couple of hundred years. the tolerances are a lot finer and they have various "anti-theft" mechanisms now. (and NOW transponders and laser-cut tolerances.... :s

anyway. by far the most common you will need is the J pick, and either a small but stiff flat head screw driver, or one of the offset "S" type. personally i use a pring steel section folded 90 degrees, so i can work the picks above it.
once you've mastered that. try cracking a combination safe. cheap bunnings ones are easy to learn on, get a stethescope too.

(most locks are easy as shit to pick, unions and dead-locks are harder, but unions use one of about 30 keys. skeleton keys aren't hard to forge. dead locks require a lot of patience.)
