    Brake caliper piston seals?

    I am wanting to change the brake seals on a caliper today. When looking at the seals they are not a perfect square, one side is fatter than the other, a bit like this pic.

    Now what I can't remember is does the thicker side of the seal sit so it is closer to the brake pads or does it sit so it is on the inside side of the caliper.
    Or does it not make a difference?

    I'm fairly certain you'll find that they are (or at least started life as) square cross sectional.

    If you buy new ... I'm sure they will come in a sealed pack .....

    As they should be fitted. (not inside out to confuse you) ...

    They are meant to be tappered and it is important to put them in the right way.
    It has something to do with drawing the piston back when you let off the pressure. A brake specialist pointed this out to me last time I bought parts.

    Can't remember which way they were supposed go,it was a while ago.

    I further recollect it being explained to me that the piston does not slide through the seal, but the seal twists and it is this elasticity that releases the brakes.

    The old guy in Lamberts brake and clutch specialists in Whangarei told me all this. He was a Knowledgeable fellow and spent ten minutes making sure I got the right parts and I knew what I was Doing . Give him a ring if you can't work it out.

    Brakes are to important to get it wrong.

    It's probably a bad thing.
