Indonesian city bans female pillions "straddling" motorcycles

The city of Lhokseumawe in Indonesia has introduced new regulations banning female pillions from stradding motorcyles – especially if they are behind male riders.

The new law is introduced to “maintain women’s dignity and good image.” This forces female passengers to ride side-saddle, despite the obvious safety issues. According to Mayor Suaidi Yahya “When you see a woman straddle, she looks like a man. But if she sits side-saddle, she looks like a woman.”

Only ‘appropriately’ dressed women (showing no curves and wearing no denim) will be allowed to ride astride a motorcycle. Critics have pointed out that the Koran does not specially instruct women on how to ride a motorbike.

Office girlies I've seen taking scooter taxis to work in Bangkok all ride side saddle while zipping between traffic on the motorway. It's probably because they're all wearing short skirts.

In Saigon, as well as Hanoi, we saw well dressed (ie: middle/upper class) women wearing short skirts commuting on flashy vespa's. The accomplished this by wearing what she referred to as modesty aprons, but I called them crotch burkas


These women also wore long, flesh colored gloves that went up to their armpits (to avoid getting sun burned arms).....that only scratches the surface of the odd shit I saw in VN.
