was wondering where do you think I could find similar sort of landscapes to ride in New Zealand... dry, desert type of roads.

    Cheers Kiwis.

Isn't everywhere like that in feb/march... dry and hot!

I will say my daughter has just been to southern Utah... pretty much the photos you show... can't wait to get there again... Usa has long roads but lots of other great aspects from the pics you posted. Very cool!

Done it once I think is amazing but can only ride on tarmac right? As far I know there is no tracks you can ride off road because it's all Army base around it?

You can ride up to the Hawkes Bay ski club, that will take you up to the snow line in winter.
Edit, it may now not be the HB ski club, but there is a lodge and ski tow on the desert road, north of the six cross camp. road bikes can handle it.

To my (very limited) knowledge the eastern side is Army base, there are roads and tracks, plus 4x4 tracks on the western side.

My advice, do some sexy bush riding, that's what NZ is about

plus there is tank tracks parallel the road. There is a 1k wide flight corridor up the centre of the road, either side is military no fly so not sure what land the army controls on the volcano side.

Take his advice ... the Army areas are indicated by big yellow "Restricted Area" signs. Some (most) of those areas are used for live firing exercises. (at odd times) and unexploded shells are often "found".

    Ignore them at your peril.
