Paul Holmes (Sir) is a human being, a dying human being. Part of being a human, is that, you alone are the creator of your mistakes, knowing how to correct those mistakes however, makes you superior to those who dont give a fuck.
Holmes is no exception, he has made more than his share of faux pas over the years, I believe his knighthood has merit, more so than a depressed ex All black.
It must be a very very tough time for his family and friends at the moment, seeing a loved loose his/her battle with a cancer, is the worst thing.......ever.
Good on Ya Maha and add to that through his tenacity & determination he bought his daughter back from near total destruction, many succumb to that bloody drug, all the charity work he has done in recent years, more than I bet 99.9% of those who have shown total disrespect for a fellow human being and his family who are travelling a dark dark road at present. I don't much care for his style of journalism, stopped watching him after his Dennis Conner stunt, but admire the way he has gone about his life in general.
Don't judge me based upon your ignorance.

Came home from work for lunch and read the news. I wonder how long he'll keep generating "news" and comment now that he's departed; surely he'd love the fact that even after his death he will still be a topic worthy of ongoing discussion on the interdweeb and around the water cooler... Ya know, in show biz there ain't any such thing as bad publicity

No - thats not fair. Most have said that they strongly dislike the man's approach but hardly anyone actually rejoices in his death or the manner of it. I don't like him but take no pleasure in his suffering.
Go volunteer in a Hospice. In fact go into any Hospice in NZ and you come across bigger tragedies in people you have never head of lives. Its not especially amazing what happened to him. If he was not a media personality you wouldnt be any the wiser.
There is a tendancy not to speak ill of the dead. Fair enough but Paul Holmes always spoke his mind regardless of convention. I kind of think he would expect people to be honest about their feelings at this time as well.
Yes, it is fair. Quite a few of them have rejoiced in his personal suffering and mocked his efforts to acknowledge the mistakes he made and the pain he caused people. This thread has simply confirmed for me that the vast majority of KBers are uncaring bastards with little regard for people who don't meet their artificial standards. You know, not motorcyclists, not independently wealthy, not completely capable as contributing members of society, (even though the following has nothing to do with Paul Holmes still is indicative of the tenor of KB), not foreign, you know, not perfect as they see it.
Kiwis are far too happy to bludgeon people into stereotypes so they can abrogate any responsibility for their behaviour and the effect it may have on others.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?
I thought it seemed like the modern version of tall poppy syndrome (the ruling elite reference made possible in 2011/12) That's kiwi's aye, take a man down at the knees, even worse when he's on his way out.
Not saying I liked the guys media style either, I didn't! But, I certainly respect what he did and what he overcame - like showing people that Aids was ok and allowing young Eve to continue her battle with Aids without condemnation. Like surviving through at least 4 (one being the fatality of his colleague) air crashes.
Uncovering facts in the Erebus crash and gaining closure for the families..
Promoting charities, notably the Paralympics for 20 years and the Stellar Trust, fighting meth use. and that's off the top of my head.
And finally, being man enough to explain and make peace with who he was and what he'd done, before passing. He deserved his Knight hood much more than others do, IMHO
ter·ra in·cog·ni·taAchievement is not always success while reputed failure often is. It is honest endeavor, persistent effort to do the best possible under any and all circumstances.

Totally Wrong !!! It's a totally Marxist analysis of his role in society as a media functionary - a person responsible for maintaining the dominant hegemony of our society ... i.e. maintaining the dominant ideology ... and therefore a functionary of the ruling elite - who was rewarded by being given a knighthood so he symbolically joins their ranks ... (Oh, and as a substantial property owner and manfucturer he does qualify as Petite Bourgoisie/Capitalist - the knighthood just removes the "petite" )
And a member of the Fourth Estate - you now - the Lords Temporal, The Lords Spiritual, the Commons - and the Fourth Estate is the media .. an estate not generally erecogtnised as having power (Unlike the other three) but wth heaps of power non-the-less.
Nothing "tall poppy" about that - a purely Marxist/Anarchist-based sociological analysis of his position and power in New Zealand Society ... I do admire tall Poppies (Edmund Hilary/John Britten/Titokowaru/Earnest Rutherford/Frank Bateson at al) ... I do not admire members of the ruling and their tools and lapdogs !!!
"So if you meet me, have some sympathy, have some courtesy, have some taste ..."
Can't read your posts in the light mode, could you please change colour?
You have a very myopic view of life and are not only factually incorrect but you canno be a happy individual with society so stacked against you.
You don't get to be an old dog without learning a few tricks.
Shorai Powersports batteries are very trick!
I see what you are saying but I disagree. Just 'cos hes Paul Holmes and dying does not mean I need to forgive him anything. If the boot was on the other foot I doubt he would be one jot repentant and he would be into me boots and all for one extra rating point so frankly I doubt the sincerity. I've known people who are genuine saints compared to him and who died three times more horribly and got fuck all. Its easy for the rich to be generous but when a poor man gives you everything he can that means something else.
The difference is hes a media figure and thus has access to a zillion more ears than I do.
Yes Kiwis bludgeon some people. Usually these are people who have behaved poorly and then accuse everyone of this tall poppy syndrome when they find out that no - the great unwashed don't think you are super amazing actually. I don't think it actually exists. Some successful people like ARE not very nice - poppies have fuck all to do with it.
I'm not an uncharitable person (or I like to think I'm not) but I see no reason to change an opinion I have held for a long time because of a pretty everyday passing.
If there is a message here - Look at the stats for prostrate cancer and go get the doc to look up your bum...
