Yes, I too should have said a big thanks to Avon City Suzuki for putting on and catering for a great event at short notice. The way Don and his team there were enthusiastic and professional in their support of Dave's seminar is an illustration on how to do things right at a dealership. Thanks guys.

I found out about this event on the day through Facebook, and went along to see what I could learn. I haven't posted on KB (or even looked at it) for quite a while, so apologies for not realising there were KBers there.

There was never going to be enough time to learn everything I wanted to, but Dave did a good job of covering the basics. Dave's discussion on maintenance was the kick in the pants I needed to take a look at the brakes on my race bike, which have been dragging a bit lately. Holy crap I'm glad I did! The reservoir looked fine, but the fluid (which was only about 300 track km old) looked pretty dark so I cleared it out. The bottom of the reservoir was coated in a thick layer of white cheesy crap. It was all through the master cylinder too. I’m pretty sure it was due to the line between the reservoir and master cylinder being a bit old and hard, which was allowing water in. Everything else was fine, but things could have gone horribly wrong if I hadn’t taken the time to check.

One of the things that frustrates me about suspension setup is the conflicting opinions you get, even from people who have been racing for years and seem to know what they are doing. I think Dave finally explained that one- everyone needs something different- what works for the guy who’s winning all the races might be crap for you.

For me the best bit was seeing how to do the basic setup for the first time. I’ve known about setting sags for years, but had no idea how to find a base point for the rebound damping. Dave’s technique is so simple…why didn’t I think of that???

There were a number of experienced racers at the seminar, and in some ways I think many of us came away with more questions than answers. Some of Dave’s advice seems to be at odds with the accepted solutions in use in NZ. I guess all we can hope for is that Dave will come back to Christchurch and we can get him out to the track to help with setup!

That is EXACTLY the essence of everything i teach. Make the bike your own to suit your needs precisely, starting with stock suspension and geometry tuning and then moving on from there when you are better than that stock suspension so expense is warranted, understood and acquired. There are many forms of upgrading from simple piston kits to full replacements, so my logic continues in this way throughout the chassis tuning process from a road rider to class champion.

I wll be back for 2 weeks in CHCH and we will get that sorted late September with Chris and Ed via Sam. I want to run in depth schools, classes, workshops and track tuning for all those that want to make things much simpler as they should be. n the interim, I'll post monthly until I return to keep everything going and build momentum for January. Any CHCH forum I should post to or group list fr racing etc?

If you are open, I would like to use some of your comments for an article I am doing for BRM here in NZ? I'll approve that with you first!

    Looking forward to next year!

Glad to hear you're coming back Dave. I'll have to keep an eye out and make sure I book in for the road racer sessions!

My biggest racing meeting of the year is coming up this weekend (BEARS Sound of Thunder)- I'll find out if the tweaking I did after your seminar makes things better or worse on Friday... expect panicked messages on Face Book…

Not sure about a local forum- I think there’s one on the Motorcycling Canterbury website? I'm sure someone can advise.

And as for the BRM article... really? Crikey! If you want to use my ramblings that’s fine with me.

That was my appallingly set up Street Triple. I have to say thanks for the re-jig: it has improved the thing immensely. I had wound all the clickers off because of the stupid earthquake damage to the roads round here and was going to get around to fiddling with them to make it better at some point. And of course I have been riding it for more than six months like that. So thanks again.

I've also taken your advice about the brake fluid thing...... and see you next time you're in town.
I thought elections were decided by angry posts on social media. - F5 Dave
