Shifting furniture across the strait.

At the end of the current dairy season, I may be helping my sons family to shift back from sth Canterbury to the Waikato.

Looking at options, 1, rent a 6 tonner and drive down and back,
2, have a shipping container delivered from Chch, picked up and bought up to the new place.
3, have a moving co. do the shift.

Which ever way is going to be expensive. Has anyone done this recently? Which companies are good, and who to stay away from.

If op 2, would they drop off and leave a container, or wait while it gets loaded? same as a removal furniture truck.

Any other options? Thanks.

Its been 20 or so years since we made the move down here, but it was pretty friggin expensive back then. But I had my own truck, so I guess that saved us a lot. The bloody ferry was pricey though, and it must be a lot worse now.

buy your own container, they're good to have. transport will depend on how desperate your local yokel is. find the guy who's company is about to go bust and screw him down for transport cost. the other advantage is that there will be a standard fee by rail/boat/truck for it, so you can ring and ask "40ft container, 300km, how much?"

if you're not in a hurry for your shit, or can get away with a trailer load while waiting for the 'tainer to land, rail is typically a cheap option.

Furniture Removals is my line of work at the moment. And unless you can fill a container ... a moving company is usually the best/easiest option. Te Awamutu is not that far off the civilised travel paths ...

It pays to contact a few moving companies ... and get a QUOTE from each. They will ask you what items you have to move. So a good list of what has to be moved is better for an accurate quote.

And it would surprise you what some want to take with them. Elderly with 60 years of gathered crap ... and the filthy rich with untold number of $20,000 art works are common.

PM me with a list that's pretty close to what needs moved, and I'll give you an idea of cost.

Try not to take stuff that costs more to cart than it's worth. (leave the beer fridge where it is) If the outdoor table is on it's last legs ... leave it. Pot plants (big heavy) are a pain an take up lots of space.

A "Self-Pack" may seem cheaper .. but a professional pack will stop MOST damage ... and quicker to load/unload. (thus cheaper)

Most moves are "Cash on Delivery" ... but a quote negotiated, with payment promised prior to (or on) pick-up ..... may save a few $$$

Container is safest if packed tightly, and will generally be cheapest, contact freight company's like mainfreight, peter bakers etc
