Not too disgraceful : as Willy's mentioned above, as they weren't noted rugby players, like most of NZ's over-achieving bike racers they are national secrets. Plus Russell came from the days when show-offs were shunned and a great deed earned a congratulatory nod from your peers...

    Record timing

When I rode my old BSA B33 to my first "real" job at DSIR in the late '60s the timing gear for the record run on the Old Tram Road was still being talked about in the cafeteria, 12 or 13 years later. It must have been Canterbury Industrial Development Division that did it - the video clip gets the name slightly wrong. CIDD grew out of a wartime collaboration between DSIR, the physics department at what was then Canterbury University College, and the engineering school of CUC. Russell's speed record has been remembered long after the timing gear has been forgotten.

Same here - although it was 16 years before I was born, but nonetheless, these guys are legends and should be as well known as say Pine Tree Meads etc.

What incredible speeds for the time.
