Textile jacket with removable waterproof outer?

    Hi All

My old used & abused Teknic Sprint armoured jacket has been a good bit of gear & I love the way I can unzip the waterproof outer & have a nice cool mostly mesh jacket for hot weather. It also does a pretty good job of being warm & dry when fully assembled. I'd happily buy another one now it's getting pretty tired but they don't make them any more. Has anyone seen anything similar that is available at present in NZ? Preferably in a bright colour & less than $500.

Removable waterproof inners are quite common, & are an utterly bad idea on every level apart from being cheap to make. Do not want.

    Cheers
    Clint

Never seen a waterproof removeable outer before, but whats your beef with the waterproof inner? I find it fantastic.
Have road crashed a Rev-it Sand jacket (waterproof inner). Liner remained waterproof, and outer took the damage...

Replaced it with Rev-it Defender jacket and pants (Goretex removeable inners).

I've got one...wouldn't be without it in adverse weather. Technically, it is a waterproof removeable outer because it's worn over the top of what ever jacket I have on at the time.
Waterproof inners in general, are not...from personal experience.

Means the entire body of the jacket gets soaked & heavy. If the outer fabric passes enough air to be cool in hot offroad conditions it will be cold onroad in cooler conditions even with the liner in. My current jacket also dosn't need to be taken off to fit/remove the outer.

My ol Teknic's outer layer is 2 layers: cordura over the waterproof bit, it takes the hits really well & has been easily repairable.

If I can't find anything similar I might go for pressure suit type armour, enduro jacket & rainsuit for non winter riding, but after about 80K km in the old Teknic in all sorts of conditions I'm kinda sold on the way it works.

    Cheers

The only one close to what you want, that I've seen is a Macna one. It's a leather jacket, with a textile outer that can be worn for rain (or cold etc).

Honestly, much easier is to have a normal rain jacket and throw it over the top (just size accordingly). Only problem is that it doesn't breathe, so you do get some condensation on the inside...

I'm with you, Clint, but have never found the exact thing you describe.

I use a Revit mesh/textile jacket for hot days and have an old Revit textile jacket that I have taken the padding and armour out of as a tough (mostly) waterproof outer. It's the same size as the mesh jacket so is a bit snug, but. Ideal would be to find a size larger for cheap on TM...

Or I am eyeing up these. Motomail do them for $140, which is a bit steep for an outer that probably won't take too many falls, but they do seem good. Probably easy enough to repair. There's a similar one (Cyclone) without hood or pockets for $100. Both have black and hi-vis options.

Incidentally, they are also knocking our Revit mesh gear cheap just now. An "Air" jacket plus a waterproof could be as low as $300. HTH.

The Revit one is a bit expensive. Just ordered another DriRider Thunderwear jacket, RRP is $89. It looks like the 2012/13 model might have varied a bit... but we'll see.

I'm tempted to try a Goretex rain jacket, but those are not cheap options...

Which is why the summer and a winter jacket that, when coupled with the DriRider rain jacket which cost $60 from memory, is all I need. Warm/dry.
I also have fleece lined oil skin long vest which is waterproof and very warm (torso only in this occassion)

I tried a DriRider one on and thought the collar was good and I suspect they'd keep the rain out well. But I think they are not breathable, which the Revit ones claim to be. Can you comment?

And yes, I have been in assorted outdoor shops myself as I reckon a climbing jacket (with abrasion resistance and GoreTex) with fully packaway hood and armpit zips would be the boss... Yet to find one close to what I want for anything like the money I am willing to pay!

Side option: if I remember his post correctly, NordieBoy uses a GoreTex camo smock from Kiwi Disposals but they thoroughly fail the bright colour test. Not sure if it has a full zip, given the name, but the picture looks like it might.

The DriRider one (at least the older one, picture on websites say the new one looks a little different) definitely doesn't breathe, and you usually end up with condensation on the inside of the jacket, which can make the outside of the motorcycle jacket ever so slightly damp. I accept the trade off for the price, pity the goretex ones are expensive. I don't want a hood either, as it's going to get in my way. I noticed recently my dririder was leaking at one shoulder, so I've just told the shop to get me another... will see if the features have changed.

The military one is interesting... might go down and have a nosey. I don't bother with bright colours as it will only get dirty anyway...

I use a revit rain jacket 100% water proof and i have a larger size so not only does it fit over my leathers on road but over all my body armour off road.
It has been tested in the lovely weather that Waiouru puts on and I was only wearing thermals and my normal jersey.
It has been crash tested as well both on and off road and has held up very well.

The new one has places to put armour in as well.

Hell yeah, I would have one but I am tighter than a tourniquet.
I would rather buy a halfway decent jacket $300/ rain jacket $60 and a decent pair of gloves $200 for the same price...or less.

If you ride in wet weather then the answer is hell yeah! The Only down side if when it's gets hot.
Most gore tex jackets will not after large amounts of venting.
