It's a start, but as it is, those who commit the benefit fraud get a slap on the wrist, then pay back the amount out of their benefit each week. its ridiculous.
Get caught for benefit fraud and you should be banned for life from getting a benefit, period.

How else are they going to pay it back? They have no other income?

People should have no right whatsoever to breed if they can't support their kids without welfare, let alone themselves.

how to pay it back? get a fucking job, or better yet, a very, very, very long term of PD/comunity work, whatever they call it these days.

as for feeding their kids? fuck them, how can they look after a kid if they cant hold down a job? remove the kids from their care until they can PROVE they can provide a safe, nurturing environment that provides all the necessities to the kids. Be better than those kids growing up and seeing the dishonesty and theft as an acceptable norm and following suit.

Typical rightwing off-the-point knee-jerk reaction - it's too late when they have kids.

See above ... and they may have already done jail time (or PD) ... doesn't get any moey back - and costs money to happen ..

There's a sensible solution ... I can actually go along with that one ... there's be a lot of kids around in social welfare homes (such a wonderful environment for kids to grow up in - NOT) or a demand for foster homes that exceeds supply ...

But some of those homes would be better than with their parent/s ... and some might not be ..

My cousin commits fraud. Paid under the table and claims benefits on top. Makes a fair bit but I think it fuels a hidden drug habit.

Been charged before but it keeps going on.

I think also if you have a girlfriend that is on a benefit you need to be careful you fully distance yourself so as to not have your assets seized for her mistakes.

Seems fair, it's a bit hard to believe that partners of those committing benefit fraud don't know about it and aren't just as guilty of spending the money.

Now they just need to do the same for dodgy business people who let their companies go broke owing people millions and have all their assets in their partners name.

I do honestly think the solution is not more laws. It's creating a better system for dealing with things period. Some kind of panel that has overriding powers to actually do the logical common sense thing. The issue is where there is power there is corruption, where there is corruption you have to set strict boundaries to combat it, when you do that you are effectively setting up a system that combats itself in getting anything done; ultimately the result is us plebs on the end of the system just have to shake our heads at the circus going on.

Everyone always applauds when a law is created that targets someone who is ripping everyone off. The reality is not much changes cause they are put through the same system that is currently failing to effectively resolve the issue. So it's just more people put before something that isn't working. This rustles my jimmies.

NZ needs more laws (and a govt that will enforce them....'merica is not into enforcement et all)

Sure, the big picture is to change the system. However, that's not a small job and IMO not losing $20million per year isn't a bad start. At least taxpayers don't end up paying it and like the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009, it's another weapon in the fight.
