    Have I munted my tyre?

I swapped my front over this afternoon. Don't know if this is generally found to be the case, but for me the Michelin Anakee 2 was a 100% PITA to get off the rim of the Freewind. I'd say about 5 times as hard as the Fullbore M41 that came off the rear yesterday.

Sadly, my heat-addled brain combined with my small skill-base and a large lever have conspired to see me damage the bead - see photos.

Bearing in mind this will be running a tube on a spoked wheel and I rarely exceed the speed limit (much), is this tyre sufficiently damaged to write off, or is it still usable?

    Thanks - Chasio

I wouldn't, and I'm as tight as a gnats chuff, if I can get away with it I'll give it a go. Except with tyres on motorcycles.

One has to wonder why you took it off ? Reason for changing it ?
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

Cheers and yes, thought so. Arse.

I ran through the opening lines of Two Weddings and a Funeral when I saw it... That was an expensive lesson (although cheaper than having it fail).

    I'd use it.

The tyre doesn't look like it has structural damage. There doesn't appear to be any damaged cords, or any cords exposed at all.

I'm with PD, doesn't look too bad, no worries about leaking as you've said you're running a tube.

If in doubt ask your local bike shop.

To fit a Mitas E-07 = more aggressive tread pattern. I'd rate the Anakee as a 90:10 road tyre whereas the E-07 is more like 60:40.

The photo doesn't show it, Mr D, but you can see some metal cords if you open up the "wound". That's my worry. A bit o' super glue, and she'll be right... (not).

I'm more concerned about the bead failing in some way while I'm riding it. Agreed I can head down and ask a shop. The odds are they will suggest it is a goner because (a) that way they have no moral liability if it fails and (b) they can try to sell me a new tyre.

I know there are tyre specialists on KB so was hoping they might chip in (some may have: I don't know what everyone does for a living).

The saving grace is that I have acquired a second-hand Battlewing in decent nick that I can use for road-biased riding instead (donated by a mate). Shame, though, as I liked the Anakee and it had heaps left.

If you can see the steel belts showing - it's history.

The odds are they will suggest it is a goner is because it's fucked, one quick glance at pic 2 shows that, with damage like that it's obvious there'll be exposed cord/belt material under it

There is indeed visible metal. So here's interesting... I popped into a local place that fits a lot of tyres. Two of them had a good look and the verdict was that it was OK as the damage was not that bad and well inside where the rim seats.

I was not expecting that reply and it goes against my instincts to use it, to be frank. I think I will just use it to practise my technique.

In that case they're idiots that shouldn't be trusted with wheel barrow tyres

if you can see the steel it's toast as water can enter between the rubber and the steel band. the water will then be drawn up the gaps in between the steel wires and rust them out. And yes this does happen, I use to fit motorbike tyres for a living and have seen tyres blow off the rim with this type of damage, mostly dirt bike tyres as they get swapped off and on depending where people are riding and the beads get damage just like what is shown in your pictures.
