They don't. they get intercepted well before making it that far and most will spend months in either Nauru or PNG where Oz has built very expensive detention centres. Nauru has been close to overflowing for a considerable portion of the past couple of years. The direct landing scenario however is something that gives Australia a serious dose of the shits.

    Oh, the irony.

I worked for a multintional tobacco corporate a few years ago, exporting cigarettes to the Pacific Islands (I know, I'm going to burn in hell). We got a bit worried when we saw a massive increase in shipments of a particular (market leading) brand of ciggies to Nauru. As it turned out, the asylum-seekers were getting paid a benefit by the Aussie gubbermint on arrival & subsequent detention and using that money to buy what we consider to be a top-end, premium brand of cigarettes. The Aussies who went up to Nauru to work in the detention centre went on to but the budget brands which they were accustomed to back home.

Do some reading, the illegals that make it to the mainland in Oz go straight onto a benefit, avoiding any stand-down period that an Aussie citizen would have to endure, even in cases of hardship.
I dont mind people coming here from other countries - in fact I welcome it. Heck, my whole family came here from England about 15 years ago.

It's when someone that comes here with no intention of integrating into the Kiwi culture nor has any skills/qualifications. There is enough people here looking for entry level jobs as it is without bringing over more.

If the system for assisting people to upskill was better it 'may' be able to cope with the extra's...

By the way - when we moved here it took us a year of tests and back and forth to London (we lived hour outside London) then my Dad had to have a job in NZ BEFORE we left England. We arrived here, within a week my Dad was working at his new job. Couple of weeks later my mother too had a job.

We even had to prove we could speak and read English. I wont tell you what my Dad's reaction to this was but considering we were all born in England, went through school system and all our ancestors are English...

But a refugee - no job. no skills. And often such a bad attitude - 'It's my right to live where I want and live off the state" etc

When I was hiring support workers for a healthcare centre I would often get foreigners apply with no experience, the ones that walked in with a one page CV, badly spelt and wearing just about rags I would turn away. I would take a person with a passion to help people and take the time to train them myself. Usually they last 6 months before they find something better...

Are you telling me that a load of strange looking foreigners are going to come to New Zealand, with no idea of the local customs, and then force those locals that were here already to adapt to their foreign ways and learn their foreign language etc etc..................nah, it could never happen in NZ

His point is that it has happened before, Maori Mori-ori(spelling) Poms, whatever. NZ is still a new country and still being colonized to the extent that most of us here are not that many generations past being immigrants ourselves.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

Don't worry bro. No one stops in Te A. Not even people who break down..........just get out of their cars and push them before the sun goes down, the banjos start and the hills have eyes.

    We are all immigrants here.
No-one was here 20 generations ago.

Anyone who says otherwise has their head so far up their arse they can see their great-great-great-grand parents. (beginning for most NZers, with select few being here 2 generations longer according to evidence)
