Name a time S1: 10am? Should we be fashionably early to Caltex?

    The planned route:
    • Meet at Caltex Rimutaka at 10:30am.
    • Leave Caltex Rimutaka and head north over the Rimutaka Hill.
    • Stop and wait in Feastherston to re-group.
    • Leave Featherston heading towards Martinborough.
    • Lunch at the Pukemanu Pub at around 12ish.
    • From Martinborough, head to Gladston (route to Gladston to be discussed over lunch).
    • Re-group at the Gladston school.
    • From Gladston, onto Masterton via the Watertower Road.
    • Re-group at the Mobil station at the north end of Masterton.
    • Onto Carterton for coffee/refreshments at the Wild Oats cafe.

For those that are keen you may like to head out to the coast or continue on north.

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Looks cool. I have been on a very large before and they had a designated 'tail end charlie' whos job was to not pass anyone and make sure that nobody got lost and had a bad day. Do you think its worth doing this on this trip?

You need to read the first post Mr Kelly.

There will be 3 groups (fast, medium, and *sigh* will you people hurry the f__k up??), each with a designated lead, whom you do not pass, and a tail-end charlie, who does not pass.

    No worries.

It's funny how your perceptions of what amounts to fast, medium, and "slow" changes on a ride like this.

The fast guys arrive, tripping, hair on fire, and stand about with a thousand yard stare. The medium group arrives 3 minutes later, buzzing, laughing, and once helmets are off, doing the, "did you see that?" talks. The slow group then rock up 2 minutes later, erect in the saddle, quietly park their bikes, and even if it is 30 degrees C, aren't sweating, and have no obvious adrenaline side effects going on.

Guess what? Every still has exactly the same amount of fun.

There will be leaders of each of the groups and tail end Charlies as well. I'll look for volunteers on the day to lead the groups and to bring up the rear.

The idea is that if you find yourself in a group that is riding beyond your abilities, pull over, siginal to the group that you're ok and then wait for the next group and join them.

If the group you've set out with is too slow, continue riding with them until the next re-group point, then join the next faster group.

Common sense will prevail on the day (hopefully).

The key thing is saftey...with this number of riders it's got to be the number one concern!

I can visualise the scene at Caltex at 10:30am: most will be shuffling around kicking tires asking which group the others are going to ride in .
