Probably wasnt the flatmates idea of a 'dirty evening'......

If you have not done it a few times it can be horrible. Easy way is... (warning you might need to remove rear fastening of any chain guard and lift it out of the way with an old bungee etc)

Loosen chain adjusters and axle - move wheel forwards

Get bike with rear wheel in the air and free to turn (not essential but best)

Rotate wheel until joining link is on the rear sprocket. Lock back wheel with a wedge/block of wood etc.

Remove joining link and drop bottom part of the old chain down.

Attach new chain to the end of the old chain with joining link.

Pull top half of the old chain which should haul the old and new chain up through the front sprocket. Get the end of the new chain and remove old chain.

Join chain with new joining link.

    Adjust chain and clean up...

He'd never changed a chain on a bike before, I didn't know that. He has only had fairly new (s1000rr at the mo) bikes and track bikes at that, and he (so he says) hasn't even done as much road riding as me in my 3 months in his 5-6 years of riding so it wasn't exactly a normal thing for him to do... Anyway we didn't have proper tools to cut the chain or to put the chain link (?????) together, took like 2-3 hours to get my chain on/change the back sprocket, we still haven't changed the front one, lol. Anyway in the end we found out that the chain adjuster on my bike had lost its thread, so the bolt was vibrating out, which is what made my chain loose... these have since been replaced...
