    DL1000 running rough

    Hi all, can anyone recommend a Guru to sort out my DL1000k8? It has started running like a bag of bolts, feels like it drops a cylinder, picks up then runs rough again. Have spent over $1000 at Suzuki dealer and issue still exists. I have tried many things myself to no avail. I have googled myself to death with vstrom issues and still can't sort the issue. Does anyone know a patient mechanic who could help? Thanks. I am located in Christchurch.

    Go back to Suzuki. If you've spent a grand with them and it still aint fixed they should be sorting it for nout

    there are a lot of things you can do yourself to try and identify the problem. Thing is tho, you need to be confident enough to do it. Have you done a tank removal? First thing I would do is remove the tank, remove the fuel pump from tank and clean both tank and fuel pump filter. You can get a free download of the manual if you search on one of the v strom forums. Otherwise if you are stuck with that I will e.mail it to you.
    While you have that off, you can check all the intake components and change the spark plugs.
    Does it only run rough at idle or is it thru the rev range?
    But anyway I am sure that one of the guys will recommend you a good mech down there.

    Had similiar problems with mine and were eventually traced to the coil(I think it was) and the fuel rail leaking or not connected properly.

    If you have spent money to have it fixed and it ain't fixed then go back and speak to the MANAGER, the mechanic would have covered basics, plugs and fuel, I can just about guarentee it's electrical if it just happenned over night, you need someone with experience.

    Some people can tell the difference between rich and lean through feel... if that's you, can you tell us if you think it's falling into a rich hole and then picking up, or is it lean and a bit twitchy? Any more description of how it feels on the road? Are there things you can do to either provoke it, or ride around it?

    Get your long screwdriver out and double check the throttle body boots both sides. Make sure the TBs are snugly home and that the rubbers mainfolds and airbox connections are actually tight.

    Between the injector rails is a small piece of hose with one use hose clamps on them. See if they have any movement or any evidence of leakage. If they do, get some EFI hose clamps (they look similar to regular worm drives clamps but they don't bite into the hose) and cut the old ones off with some side cutters and replace them.


    Those on the left. Somewhere with quality hardware like Wurth will have them. Maybe Repco.

    Remove the front plug, check the drain hole for it (the plug tunnel in the head/cam cover), and make sure the inside of the plug boot isn't rusty.

    Run a bottle of injector cleaner through it. If you don't ride it much you can get varnish building up sediment on the injectors. Next step for injectors is pull them and have them cleaned by an auto electrician or injector shop; you can't double check the spray pattern (that the particulate matter on the pintle mucks this up) any other way easily. The Yanks go crazy over Sea Foam (checmical suppliers appear to water their marine products down less), but I'm not sure if that's available here... eBay etc.

    After that things get more seriouser (you like that hitcher!)


    Do you have a Power Commander? If so, can you confirm that when connected to a laptop the TPS signal is clean, reacts and real time, and doesn't fluff about or get stuck (say at 5% instead of fully closed, or 85% when WOT, or anything other than exactly what you dialed up instantly.

    How late is it? I'm not sure where the early/late EFI change came in for a VStrom, presumably 05 like the SV1000? (it changes the EFI configuration slightly).
