new member from the shore

Hi, just new to kb.. been looking at the posts for a few days and i gotta say the community here's pretty cool!

Looking for some people in North shore, Auckland who can help me suss out my bike. Haven't ridden in 5 years (last one i rode was a kawa 150 standard tourer. can't remember the model though). And just got my learner's last week. YAY!

Got an 89 cibby 250 from a mate. I'm sure the bike's alright but i seem to keep stalling on this one (not as forgiving as those old bike's i'm used to). And I end up having to keep starting it and drains the battery pretty quick. Is there a trick to riding these kind of bikes?

hey, welcome.. I'm over the shore if you need a hand..
Any idea on why it stalls? Is the bike running ok while you're riding it? is it just when you stop at a junction or something?

thanks guys. The bike just stalls at intersections and when im goin uphill and stop (could be just coz im a crappy rider lol). haven't ridden for years so just consider me as a newbie to biking since im starting from scratch. Still not comfortable enough to go on main roads here in the shore.

It could be that you're a crappy rider, or it might be that the idle is set too low, or a combination of the two.

Sometimes the bikes just dies just after i've started it. Tried to give it a bit of throttle while in neutral to up the revs but same thing happens

Yeah vifferman, I need HEAPS of practice before I even consider goin out on main roads. Anyone care to help me out?

By the way how long till you guys have gotten used to your 1st bikes?

Well, depends how you define "used to it", after all, you never stop learning, but probably about 2-3 weeks and 20 hours. I was very comfortable after that.

After 5 hours I was commuting from out east into the CBD.

Bar wrong settings on the bike (which it could be), CBRs also aren't a very torquey (yes, I just made it a legal word) bike, so what sort of revs are you at when pulling away?

How about going to a local carpark (when no cars are around) and practise there... to build up some riding skills...
Once you get the hang of it then venture out onto the streets a bit...
The more you ride the better you will be accustomed to your bike and the way she handles.

The boys over the shore will be able to help you out...
