any ideas on what might cause this?
just started happening today.

Carb breather or Carb overflow ... ???
Probably sticking float level valve.
When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
Fix 1. Tap on the carb bowel lightly with a screwdriver or similar, and see if fuel stops
Fix 2. Turn the fuel off (if it has no vacuum valve) and drain the carb. then a quick flush. (suck on the vacuum hose if it has one)
Fix 3. Pull the bowel off and see what is making it stick.
Check your manual for correct float level settings and check all bowels are set correctly.

um question please, maybe coincidentally or not the choke is not working very well either recently, its not really doing anything in the morning when I start the bike, it seems to be just dumping in fuel but the revs are not going up as I would expect and I need to do it manually with the throttle.
think these are connected?

looks like the petcock is poked,
If one or both carbs are overfull ... it is probably flooding on starting. Thus no noticeable change would be heard. And it would run like a dog ...
Sort the petcock out and go from there. It's not a great idea to "fix" it yourself. (if it even CAN be)
Usually you just end up with it in small pieces that wont go back together again. New removes the problem for quite some time.

finally got it replaced after a long wait for it from Japan, got it installed last night, rides like a new bike.
