Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Didn't say it was...just pointing out that the reason for the results may be self selecting participants rather than marriage making them happy.

One could then push the boundaries and test whether it is a religeous aspect that affects the mental state or the perceived "permanence" of an open ended monogomous relationship.

Thus one would see the same results in civil unions. It would be interesting to see whether men are happier in polygynous marriages (where they are legal), or unhappier that they have mutliple mothers in law (Was Abraham(3) happier than Esau(2)? Was Abijah (14) happier than Abraham?).

I see your point. There have been many studies done over the years as society and values change and people's perceptions of what is the norm are changed.

Throughout the years, the conclusions of the studies have remained very constant with the happiest people being those in monogomous heterosexual marriages.

Ed, how do you put a value on happiness in order to measure it?

We could not do such studies as part of our papers while I was doing my B.A in Psych, nor have I read a peer reviewed article of any sort that refers to a unit of happiness, nor has there been an agreed unit on which to measure happiness. Any such study is done by either incompetent fucks or horribly bored trolfessors.

Been married 38 years and we are as close as we've ever been. I look at other women ( all men do ) but apart from some light flirting occasionaly, have no interest in risking losing my soulmate. We dont need anyone else in our relationship.

As a teenager, I cant remember the number of times we 'scored', mostly bullshit, amongst testosterone fuelled egos. A bit like riding bikes, no one wants to finish with the least number of notches on his gun.

Two things in this world, most men will never admit they can't do, 1; drive a car, and 2; make love.

So are you saying gays can't be happy?

Or perhaps the issue is that through the years it's been illegal, and then after that socially unacceptable to admit to being in a homosexual relationship, let alone being happy in one.. and it's still illegal to be in a monogamous homosexual marriage.

(And just to clear the air, I am not gay, I am very happy in a heterosexual relationship, but I know a few people who are also quite happy in their homo relationships too.)

Hmmmm, so is it the marriage thing or the declared open ended monogomous relationship that increases happiness? After all nobody is stopping people loving who they want, for as long as they want. They even have a legal framework that provides the same legal rights and protections as marriage should they wish to. So why are they unhappy?
