They mention they raised $70k of the $150k required at the charity, I'm sure the mugger has enough body parts to cover the $80k shortfall

Mere speculation regarding the footnote - is this what is wrong with the NZ model?
Bloke that munts himself on a bike is fully covered by the taxpayer.

No and yes. The no blame, no feeding the ambulance chasing lawyers is good but don't delude yourself that it provides the best of care, even when someone else munts the biker, biker must buy own state of the art leg http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/n...ee-gets-leg-up. The lack of money for some natural causes is disturbing but all countries have this issue.

What's right with NZ, that taxi driver.

But really not only a feel good cop story but also a good taxi driver - in the same story.

The other issue is incidence of different injuries/diseases. We are a nation of 4 million - we can't legitimately support the infrastructure, specialists, systems and equipment to deal with an affliction which affects one person in a million. If we did, then thousands with more common diseases or injuries would go without treatment in order to fund the few special cases. This is (presumably) why he has to go to Germany for the surgery - and if every sufferer of every condition, for which there was treatment overseas, was flown there and had their bill footed by ACC/MoH/whoever.... well, you think goverment spending is high now?

It sucks, it's not fair, but it's the least unfair available to us.

Good story though and agreed on the taxi driver comment. People stepping in to help other people rather than themselves is what makes an awesome society.

Good skills to the cop..... Knee hard in to the back would have been the first move... 1am it would have been hard to spot the replica wasn't real.

Cops should put on wigs and dresses and go for a stroll there more often

If he is going to Germany then I guessing this is elective. I'm guessing if he chooses to stay in NZ and get treatment it would be covered.

We don't want to be flying people all over the world on a whim of treatment when we have facilities here.

Well done. A good result, though...

The headline could have read "New Zealand Police solves crime by accident" There has been a number of muggings here lately ( esp in that area, of tourists ) I would have thought the police would have set some bait on purpose and arrested some people before this "accidental" arrest. But I suppose it's too big an ask to want them to prevent crime when they are so busy responding to it, in between collecting revenue etc. The other thing to consider is what if he'd just been shot dead? Only an idiot takes his fists to a gunfight. I don't know, maybe the cop was some kind of Ninja and was obviously confident enough to assume the outcome that happenned. Police advise everyone else to comply with armed attackers while getting as good a description as possible. That's really the most sensible thing to do.

I'm not bagging the officer for his actions as I don't know the exact situaion. ( perhaps he thought he was going to get shot so decided to have a punt ) I just think the way it is reported doesn't relate many facts or a full picture of the situation. It just reads as a scene from a cop TV show and glamourises the incident which may give some the impression that taking on an armed attacker is an easy thing to do. Even with years of training, it's not.

more like good old KB. I bit of critical thinking/debate Not quite the usual bagging the but a change from the pat on the back they have been getting.

Food for thought. You wouldn't really expect NZ media to provide a detailed, factual view of the situation and they are only reporting it third hand from the Taxi driver's view point. The officer might have been able to pick the gun was a fake, what was the lighting like, his experience, the arsehole's demeaner etc. Perhaps the officer is a mentalist and read the arsehole's body language.

I don't know that OSH would allow the police to run a bait operation, suppose they could providing they used all the appropriate safety precautions like stab and hi-vis vests

The media? Objective and fair..? LOL!!! This is the general state of the media, not just in this case.

However, good on the Copper! As has been said, we don't know the full situation he faced and he made a split second decision based on his experience and ability. Especially where his lady was concerned, hubby's tend to be rather protective...
