The wings do work when cornering, and yes, they're still just as effective. The whole point is to keep the car balanced.Originally Posted by chris

Regarding the last post by Chris #28 I think); a spoiler at the front is to dirrect air from going under the car and becoming 'dirty air' when it 'snags' on all the sticky-out bits under the car, it can also cause a low pressure area under the car at speed which increases the down-force on the tyres.
A rear spoiler is to streamline the flow of air so that the various airstreams that have parted to go around the car will merge without creating a vacuum (that would 'hold' the car back so to speak).
A wing has to have sufficient area and angle of attack to be effective - the downside being the increased drag at higher speeds.
Most wings on boy-racer type cars would at best put about 30-40kg downforce at 200kph.
Harumph,
(puts bifocals back in spectacle case, straightens all 4 pens in pocket protector, hangs up white coat and walks off).

All this chat reminds me of the (ahem *cogh* only) day I had out at Pukekohe open day.
They boys in their cars getting out and going for it - got up to some reasonable speeds too, but there was the small issue of all the money being spent on making it go FASTER.
None (or not enough) of it had been spent to make them STOP faster... One skyline was doing a good rate of knots down the backstraight - and to be fair sounded nice too...
It disappeared in a cloud of dirt off the end of the backstraight. Brake fade!

There was a bluebird sedan (completely stock!) in my street that had a very purposeful looking wing. i.e a no bullshit, carbon fibre twin slat type wing. But it must have been at LEAST 45 degrees from the boot of the car. Apart from looking extremely gay on a nanna car, i'd love to know what they do to the fuel mileage. It had the sort of angle where you'd just get drag and no downforce!Originally Posted by scumdog

Consider the ground effects in F1, they produce so much drag that just backing off the throttle produces around 1 g deceleration.
Get 'em sideways and they lose all downforce. Whoops!
Get behind another car and you lose so much downforce you can't pass.
Most grip problems on your average race sedan is due to poor mechanical grip caused by the compromised suspension systems they have. Aero packages attempt compensate for these problems.
Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
My MX5 had the factory spoiler on the back when I got it,That was the first thing to go.It didn't even have an airfoil section,so probably afforded no down force anyway. Then I raised the excessively lowered suspension and now it does go round corners.Originally Posted by vifferman

Car must be a tad unaerodynamic if it needs enough spoiler to help him cornering/braking, the inverse lift it is needed to perform must cause a fair bit of drag at higher speeds.Originally Posted by Devil
Has he actually DONE any experiments to see how much down-force he is actually getting?? I have and it's easy to set-up a test rig on the car.
Be better if he could move existing weight further to the rear.
