MJ is freely available. It really isn't hard to hook yourself up with a dealer. You simply ask someone the question et voila. Sure it's easier than walking down to the dairy to pick up legal highs, but they shouldn't be stocking them and I'm very much up for the Dutch model of Cafes etc... But make no mistake, it is readily available. If, as is reported, 400,000 people smoke mj then it's hardly a hard to obtain resource is it? I came off the boat and found someone who smoked within the first day.

Severe and consistent penalties don't work. 400,000 people remember. The who thing is getting ridiculous and the reasons for mj being illegal are a nonsense given the availability of legal highs and alcohol. I agree with education, but I was educated in the just say no era and still went on to take drugs. Why keep pushing shit up hill when you know the core message of the education, i.e. don't take drugs, isn't working, let alone the hypocrisy of legally available substances and their side affects compared to that of mj.

There are perceived to be more positives than negatives if you look at the issue dispassionately. Give me my freedom to choose and if I fuck up, then by all means punish me. If I don't, then leave me the fuck alone to indulge. My wife has no issues with me using and being around the kids, why shouldn't the govt?

When I got back after 7 years in Australia, I was able to get a 50 within 2 hours of getting off the plane, and half of that was waiting for the guy to come down and meet me at KFC in Riccarton.

The reason 'just say no' 'hugs not drugs' and d.a.r.e never worked was we all knew it was bullshit propaganda even at primary school.

Decriminisation is the logical first step, just as Civil Unions were the first step towards equality and fairness for Homosexuals. There are still a lot of Kiwis, predominantly from Ed & Grubbers generation that have been rounded up like sheep into believing what they do and it will take a long time for that to wash out. Decriminalisation with strict limits for age/posession, better testing technology to test for actual impairment and quality education and awareness right through our society. It's a big job but it's gotta be better than creating 30,000 criminals each year. The cost could be offset somewhat by saving all the money currently being wasted from pops through to courts and prisons.

The liquor companies stand to lose and the legal highs industry would disappear. Foodstuffs & Progressive might be able to offset their losses in liquor with buds at the checkout.

Finally some sensible conversation.
Would just like to add that it is not only "my generation" Madness that really have no interest in drugs and would prefer it eradicated if ever possible.
My kids have a huge bunch of mates that wouldn't have a bar of it, and for the record, they have different parents the lot of them. Age ranging between 15 and around 30 at a guess. I haven't heard any of them say different.
So it's not just a generational thing to be fair.
But in part i can agree with some portions of your statement. If you are sitting at home sensibly having a toke, or for that matter drinking a few ales with ya mates, then so be it and leave you alone. Not totally comfortable, but near enough. I don't necessarily have to invite you to my place or like you for it, but it's your choice.
If i ever find out you have arrived at my place after the effect without asking my permission then you will get my foot up your arse, my choice. I actually find that pretty damn offensive to be honest.
If you ever drive on the same road as me under the influence or work with me ( not like that will happen, cause i won't let it) then don't expect me to show you any mercy either, as i don't suffer fools gladly.
so i'm somewhere in between, but have to say, i have never seen any good come from pot or any other substance, and i have been around and in some very dark places at times, so i do have some links one way or another.
Not so sure it's anything to do with being rounded up like sheep, we just have a far different train of thought on these things for different reasons.
Do you ot think also that the money could be saved by people just getting their highs from more life substance, that way we wouldn't have to chase the users around all day, if they weren't interested in using that is. There is more to life than chasing an artificial high, you can get a rush from all sorts of natural daily chores or passions. You ride a bike, surely you must get some rush out of that! At no cost to your health either! Or anyone else's for that matter. (accidents under the influence)

I detest the shit and those who use it, for reasons i have given and plenty more i haven't, nothings changed.
But what i do see now is someone who has not sat there and said it's my way or the highway but at least offered up some kind of solution for his part.
For me, don't see the need for it in society as a general and i'm the same with alcohol just in case you were wondering.
