Mate - I'll be honest .. I can't ... if it plugs together and requires no cutting and fitting then I can build it ... if I need to use any sort of cutting tool (apart from a chainsaw) and cut stuff to fit - then I'm fucked ... I can't even cut a straight line with my skillsaw (a mis-named piece of equipment ...)

Show me a workshop and I can tell you what most things do and how they work .. but just don't ask me to touch making tools 'cause I'll probably fuck it up ... (oh, I can change the oil, do plugs and I have rebuilt small engines .. but that is not designing and building them)

So as far as designing something awesome like a Britten 1000 -- No Chance !!! (Unfortunately .. 'cause I do wish I was a bit more technically skilled.)

But ask for 10,000 words of an academic journal article - the only question is when do you want it by?

I prefer to take things other people have made, have a ham fisted attempt at modifying them and fail dismally, then throw them unfinished in the corner of the shed.
