Thread: Suzuki GN250 headlight. Upgrade?

    Suzuki GN250 headlight. Upgrade?

    I have a little GN250 for my Daughter to learn on, Figured its low enough and not to heavy for her ..... But a 35 watt headlight??

    Anyone running the 55/65 watt bulbs? Does the wiring handle it? or is it going to need a relay system wired in, I have found it easy enough to fit the std 55/65 headlight bulb in and have a plug that I can solder on to go to the bulb but before I connect it I thought I would ask.... as if it needs a relay I might as well put one in before fitting the plug (save redoing things)

    She wont be riding at night for a while but a brighter light will make the bike more visible to others during the day, will fit LED Fog lamps or Daytime running lamps as well

    While the bike is in bits I want to do the extras so I don't need to strip it again, Doing a Cam grind and rocker fix + a repaint if time permits but the later may wait until she has had more time on the bike in case it gets damaged

    Ask Katman he might know something, he's been working on trying to get something better for Grashoppers headlight. Me personally I find it's OK? I rode from Auck to Taupo on Friday predominantly in the dark and didn't take much longer than normal. Guess there's nothing wrong with MORE light though!

    More light to spot those unmarked road works with gravel is always good..... Mind you it cant be any worse than riding with my tinted visor on at times

    Usually swap it as soon as it gets near dark, I do like to see where I am going, I have some 3w LED spots that fill in close she can have when my 10W LED spots arrive.... Still plenty of time as she doesn't get old enough until September but I will have here riding in paddocks before then.... She may even be able to touch the ground on my XR250?

    If it works I have plenty of spare bulbs and plugs if you want to try the upgrade.... Assuming your light is the same internally as hers (well my bike for her to ride)

    I have a 1987 ginny. A 35 watt bulb will wear out within a month. Wellington Motorcycles gave me a 45/45 watt bulb. I wanted the 55/65 watt bulb, but they said the wiring wouldn't handle it. What would also be good would be to ride the bike around a paddock with the headlight off to let the battery charge up a bit (the headlight on all the time can drain the battery).

    i replaced my partners one with a h4 halogen 55/60 just needed to get a new plug to suit,
    we never had any problems with the wiring and this was a 2006 model

    plastic fabricator/welder here if you need a hand ! will work for beer/bourbon/booze

    Just wire one through a relay as it'll work better that way

    If you're having flat batt issues with a headlight, I suggest checking the charging system Mine can keep up with a 55w without the battery dying

    sounds like a relay might be a good idea then it will be all good

    Although one above works with no relay but you will get a brighter light with one if the wires are on the light side....still not hard to do, just will cost a headlight relay or two std ones, Now to look around my gear for spare relays that will suit as I might have some at the workshop

    a quick check of my electrical box a

    lucas srb501 ( 12v 20/30a ) would be fine.

    use the low / high beam loom on the bike to trigger the relay.
    pins 86 and ground pin 85

    you can bring the positive voltage to pin 30 ( fused )
    pin 87 to the low beam ( and day running lights )
    pin 87A to the high

    have to check the rules on day running lights to see if they do have
    to dip when high beam is used..

    this way you can make a piggy back loom without cutting the original up
    and revert to stock if required later on.

    Daytime running lamps are not legally allowed to run while the headlight is on (but some factory H/lights are on full time and have day running lights so.....?? ) .... Fog lamps can run full time with the headlight as long as they are set below low but only when foggy legally....

    I have plenty of std relays, Or will grab a headlight relay if there isn't.... Lots of options for them

    5 pin relay can be used but then you need to have the battery feed switched with the ignition and it will be on full time with the ignition on (not a bad thing) but the feed switch will have to handle the full current of the lights, or run the feed through a second relay, or run two 4 pin relays or run a single 6 pin relay with double activation... No problems to sort just getting the gear at the right price (free is good :P )

    That DRL rule is fucking stupid. I'll run my DRLs whenever I want, it's safer and fuck them.

    I run with dog lamps on full time...If I get pulled up on it they are DRL's as I don't think there is an instant fine for that like there is for fog lights

    Although I will have DRL's as well before too long as my black bike obviously doesn't stand out as I still have to use the airhorn a bit to let people know they just pulled out in front of someone....
