Round 2 of the XC series today.
For some reason, I was thinking it was something like 35min + 1 lap.
    5*20min laps later

Yesterday I received and installed a set of 9 speed grip shifters and cut up and slid on a pair of ESI foam grips.

    Fark!
I don't know if it was that or playing with the rebound damping or what but the bike feels totally different.
I was able to climb seated up some sections every lap that I couldn't when scouting the track, wheelies over rises were easier and even climbing out of the saddle felt totally different.
Not all to do with the damping...

I remembered why I like Grip Shift too

My tri bike, road bike and old mtb were all Grip Shifters.

Oh shit. Just realised I've still got them...

Going to see if I can build a Diamond Back V-Link 3 up from bits for NordieStepSon2 to use at the Urban XC...

Oh, and who the hell felt that a pair of 20x27x4mm bearings was fine for a front mtb wheel?

    Nice and light though...

$28 each from NZ or 10c US from AliBaba, but you have to buy 10...

Drained 100ml of oil from the forks and put the correct 94ml back in.
That might help get a little more travel out of the buggers.

But they also say 120psi is right for my weight but I've found 90psi works far better.

Did a 16km ride this week, up Rapaki track, over Mt Vernon, round the Bowenvale traverse and down Victoria park

Rapaki is the only hard bit as it's a steady 4km climb, by December I want to be able to do two laps

Sunday's XC looks to be basically a steady forestry road climb (2km up Sharlands Rd from the car park) and a singletrack descent (What the DOCtor Ordered and Willow Lane).
    Not sure how many laps.

Going out tomorrow to find out...
First time in Hira without at least 250cc...

    Ok...

It's a 2km steady forestry road climb up and basically, a narrow, no passing width, pump track back.

Not my idea of a cross country track at all

Only bonus is, the guns will be heli-biking up Ben Nevis tomorrow...
Pulled a 160mm front disc off NordieBro's bike and slapped a 203mm in it's place. Let's see if he can overheat that one...

Must have been a big ride over marl today i saw some big wave riders heading over this morn. Maybe Whites bay tracks.
Def need 203s for any real munty stuff. My brakes used to trumpet down the old devils tail from fringe. A DH mate had some trick vented twin discs. Corse I did talk to a guy who rode without using his brakes much (wheres the tugger smilie)

The tracks are getting really overgrown at the mo with all the rain. we need more less serious crime to get a few more PD boys doing mintenance.

Came down Firball from beside IV Line and may have to invest in some Fox Bomber glubs for some gorse protection...

What happens when discs overheat? Fade/squeal? I've been riding Richmond hills and the Rameka (x2) the last few weekends with some long descents and I haven't had any issues with rubbish Tektro cable discs! Does that mean I'm going too slow in the first place?!

yep fading & squealing & if you want to be part of the cool kids gang you can get yourself a free disc tattoo on the calf.

I boiled mine during a long really slow steep descent from a firebreak off Fringe one year- really steep & big cross ruts. I ended up with no brakes having to bail into a gorse bush to stop even greater damage to myself.
if you are moving without the brakes on the discs can cool quite quickly as they're quite thin. Brake pad quality is prob a factor.

Overheating is usually fade, but more so with hydro than cable discs. No fluid to boil.
My disc tattoo took about a month to disappear

    Sunday's XC race.
The kid I'm riding with as I enter the DH is Callum Bryant. We did 2 laps together. Couldn't get rid of the little bugger, but then again, he couldn't get rid of me either

It'll flake off just after you've got used to it...

I've just got some Avid 160's that are quite a bit more ventilated than my old Shimano's from my cable discs...
