May have been the pig making it a bit rough and not the rigid fork after all.
My back was killing me and I had to stop 5-6 times down Boulder Valley to shake out my wrists.
Kidney belt and compression sleeves would have been welcome.
Or a suspension fork with remote lockout.

Think I've mastered auto unclipping mid crash now.
Clipped bank on weekend on fast left hander, nek minnit tighter turn sees front wheel sniffing the bank then we're straight over the bars at about 35km/h.
Nice rolling breakfall onto hardpack rocky limestone, bike did a good weedcutter impersonation and slayed some blackberry bushes
Helmet never touched the ground so still no excuse to upgrade! Had to stop and catch me breath a bit afterwards though...

I just don't go fast. Makes crashing less of an issue, but racing is therefore a little challenging.

Speaking of racing, this Sunday is the final of the club XC series.
Looks like it's a big climb/big decent track.
Down Turners and up the new climbing track...

    Down Turners...
    Don't like those words.
The last race, I skipped because it was a big climb/big downhill track. This is worse, the downhill AND climb are on single track with limited passing/being passed opportunities.
It's an Enduro with timed climbing!

May skip it and go riding in Richmond!

Will have to test the track on Friday evening...

Anyone want/need a 19" 2007 Giant XTC Composite race bike?
Built it up and with a longer seatpost (420mm) it'd fit me nicely, except the top tube is about 5cm too short.
Knees in danger of hitting the bars

Climbing on it, hauling on the bars, good side to side action and the frame is sweet, bugger all flex. Wish my Stumpy was as stiff.

Roval wheels, Niner RDO carbon seatpost, 1x9 gearing, RockShox SID forks, Elixir R brakes (160 & 180mm). Weighs about 10.3kg.

Gave it a burl last night.
Went up Jacks climbing track to the skid, down Turners, up TM2YL, down IV Line and back to the start.

Didn't die, but will be taking the bike with gears and front suspension.

Met some guys at the bottom of Turners who couldn't believe the XC was going down there.
"Cross country bikes down Turners?!", were the words used.
Which was a bit weird, as they'd just seen me come down it on a rigid single speed.

I was 2min faster down it than ever before. Took 4min
The record on Strava is 1:45

By the 4th or 5th lap, it'll either be easier or bloody awful

Weather looks good, just enough rain to prep the track to perfection. Maybe.

Nerves kicking in. Heart rate higher now than at the start of the race!

The race didn't start well. A 20min climb at 170bpm to the start area (Turners Skid) isn't ideal preparation.
The track included the Firball climbing track, half of Firball, back to the Turners Skid, Turners, TM2YL and back to Turners Skid (figure of 8 layout).

Was hard climbing that's for sure.

Improved my Turners time from 4:01 to 2:59! Only 37s to go to catch up to Warewolf!

Shoulder checked a tree going up TM2YL and it spat me off and tweaked my leg so I played it safe and cruised to the finish and called it a day after 2 of the 4 laps. I was also out of water already.

Back to the single speed now!

Checked out some more of the Great lake trail around Taupo on Saturday. Did the Western Bays bit down the Waihaha stream, then along to Waihora Bay, got a boat ride to Kawakawa Bay then rode over to Kinloch. Absolutely primo singletrack, all built to a fairly cruisy grade, lots of scenic bits, plus we had a stellar day for it. Highly recommended.

    Cheers

Both the above quotes are topical for me today - taco'ed my front wheel (a Mavic Crossmax SL) mentally trying to catch up with Fran's time on Turners.

Anyone know if you can lace one of the Crossmax hubs to a normal rim, or, as I've only broken a single spoke if there's some other clever trick I can do?

    Single spoke or munted rim?

I was on a hard tail with ultra light weight racing wheels and dropper post.

Oh yeah, you're only 4s behind me

I put up a proper segment "Turners (full)" because the other ones either didn't start or didn't finish at the ends of the track.
Same with "Take Me To Your Leader".

Oh, with the new Turners segment being longer, Warewolf is now 41s ahead of me

Considering the track, it's not surprising there were quite a few heavier duty full suspension bikes racing Sunday.

Ha strava life - a few of my students have spotted me on there now and are stealing my obscure Richmond hills KOMs - or is that just me being paranoid?!

Rim has been destroyed (huge bend had to be stomped straight to get to the bottom - so I could push it back to the top of TMTYL...) - my old commuter bike has donated it wheel to the cause. Off for a Kaiteriteri -> Canaan loop -> Rameka mission on Friday/Saturday so I'm relieved it was salvagable.

Uploading my strava data now so you can see exactly how far down Turners I made it before throwing my bike away!

Still having issues with rim tape moving, think the bentragers are just flexing so much nothing will ever be 100% without stiffer rims. Havent pulled tyre off but came home with flat after ride tonight

    What rim tape?
The Stan's tape seems to hold pretty well.

Got a FSA 28 spoke 26" wheel set that are heavy and flexy.
But seem to hold up well and were really cheap.

I want a nice stiff, tubeless, 23mm rim, 29" setup on the new single speed. Haven't got the bike yet, but I think it's got heavyish 19mm wheels.
